Why would you rebuild a motor that you rebuilt last year?

The motor I rebuilt last year was having troubles with the head sealing properly with the block. Its currently back in the shop having the block decked (which should have been done the first time).

I guess I missed it but where in the world did you find this engine? I always dream of going to a junk store or junk auto parts place only to find something for the M151.....Guess I'll just have to dream on. Everynow and again, I find odd things for military vehicles at flea markets...

Hey Flyboy-
These motors are out there. Several members have them squirreled away. Most people that have them keep it on the DL and seldom (in the foam) do they ever get offered publically. I found this one through Mr. R in Tampa. This area (Tampa/Clearwater/Frostproof) seems almost like a golden triangle of strong MV karma. Of course I've realized this and I am thereby actively pursuing moving to this area. I am sure that when I do only good things will result.

Flyboy,

Keep looking they are out there, I have 2 of them. The box is a little beat up but was in dry storage for many years.

What is a "ball park" price these days for a new engine in the box?

I don't understand the hoopla of an NOS motor. The thing is almost 30 years old and seals no matter how well preserved deteriorate over time. Not something I'd spend my money on but hey I hope this works out for you.

Hey Guys-
I wanted to update the forum on the status on this motor. Like me I bet some of you have also had a "dream" of someday finding an NOS motor to drop into your Mutt. Unlike me some of you have likely already installed NOS motors, from the foam lined box, and had nothing but good things to say about the experience. Heck I personally know someone that's installed multiple NOS motors with no problems.

So... you can imagine how sad I was when I removed the drain plug to see only water (1/4 cup) come out. The horror I saw when I removed the drain pan can only be expressed through photos

Anyway this experience has gone a long way to curing me of my future desire to purchase an NOS motor... your results may vary :)

Sorry to hear that Matt, but glad the seller was as stand up guy. Seems you have had some bumps in the road on this "refresh", hope it smoothes out for you. How about some photos of the mutt so we can see what you are really doing to it :?: :?: :)

Long as it came with the spark plug adapters and a new carb, it was still worth a couple hundred bucks. I'm just sayin... Hate to see a historic hunk of Ohio craftsmanship go down without a laze of glory though. Just glad my 2 NOS hunks of Ohio craftsmanship were stored "outside the box" so to speak.

Agreed it isn't worthless and I am sure it can be rebuilt. That said I don't need another motor that needs to be rebuilt. It wasn't fitted with spark plug adapters though (not a big deal to me) and somewhat interestingly this motor, which was clearly an A2 configuration and packaged in 1983, came with a "light duty" head. I would have thought it would have had the heavy head? I wonder when that switch took place?
