Electric Fuel Pump Question

Unread post by cstaup » June 4th, 2010, 2:23 pm

My (A1) fuel pump runs intermittently. When I have higher revs, it pumps normally. At lower revs, idling, parades, etc... it pumps off and on, (not rhythmically).

Do these pumps operate relative to the fuel used at the motor/carb? Or is my pump ready to take a dump and leave me stranded?

I have "jumped" it at the safety switch, same situation. Thanks.....

The pump will only run when the pressure drops, What yours is doing is perfectly normal.

Yep, my 1967 M151A1 does the same. I don't hear it anymore when driving. Guess I got used to the sound.

Well, I figgered that the pump was falling apart. I drove around the block until I stalled out. Then I jumped the pump ( the 77s wire) It would not go. I let it cool off for about 20 minutes, Bam! It works. I have a couple Iffy pumps. I'll swap ' em out and see what happens

Take one of the pumps apart and see if the balls are varnished up. The electrics do not generally go bad on these. If you do decide to trash them throw them in a box and send them to me. I will see if I can get them going again.

I wanted to take one apart and see how it works. I'll send you a couple Rick. Is there any hint? As my X-ray vision isn't as good as it used to be, a breakdown pic?

Never really located a picture but If I remember correctly the end cap comes off and you can take it apart from there. it has been a while since I took one apart. I will look at the one I have at home and get back to you. Something you can try, Apply power to the wire with the pump out of the tank and see if you get a power reading off of the case. Do this AWAY, far away from the open tank as there might be a spark when you check it. If you have power going in and power showing on the case while holding away from ground then the circuit is good and it is probably clogged. You can try spraying some carb cleaner in the pick up and shake the hell out of it and that may unclog it.

Ok. One was really gunked up and very rusty, another one ...the broken one had a broken ball retainer. and that boogered it all up. I took the best from all of them cleaned and cleaned in and out, a little whiskey delta to keep id smooth as it went together...and it worked now very quiet compared to before.

I figgered I had nothing to lose. I even blasted and wire wheeled the parts (not the plastic or fine metal), lotsa q-tips help alsoand shop air.

Two time this  f****g  bulb let my thew in the field. I used tree bridges cables in the bulb connector to solve momentary the problem.

took mine apart this week. found the power wire was broke and only being held in position by the Insulation around the wire
so when It wanted it made contact... some times it ran for weeks some times it ran for 20 seconds..and then an hour ..
well it stopped this week would only make one pump or 2 then mothing... I would tap it and again one pump or two...
I used a cut off wheel to cut of the top of the cap.. and I plan to solder a new power wire in place.. when I jumped it direct to the stub inside it ran fine..
