starter/bendix ?'s

Unread post by whirook » May 9th, 2010, 8:07 pm

The engine that came with my project did not run when I got it. The #1 cylinder was frozen.
I have since had the engine rebuilt. That being said I have dropped the engine in and have started to install the various other engine parts. One of which is the starter. When I started to install the starter I noticed that there was some resistance to bolting it on the last 1/4" or so. I could push it in all the way but if I let go it would spring back that 1/4". The flywheel pan has not been installed yet so I crawled underneath with a flashlight. What I noticed was that the starter gear was fully engaged with the flywheel. The question I have is this normal for these starters? All the other engine starters I have seen only engage the flywheel when power is sent to them.
Also were there two types of bendix? Because I have noticed that all the pictures & parts diagrams show an exposed spring in the middle of the bendix. Mine does not have that large spring, so I guess it is possible that spring is missing.
Thanks in advance!!!!

The Starter should look like this, the spring "must" be there!

hello

this normal if some one turns the starter by hand the gear go to the front
if you mount your starter and start one`s it will go back out
it is NOT possible to do this by hand
there are inside the Bendix three steel balls tad hold it to the front if you turn it by hand no problem there
it must have a little grease with oil not so as on the picture
look also if the little bearing in the bell housing has oil

(don t try to get the Bendix a part it is a hell of a job to get it together again )

OK, I looked at it again; on mine it appears that the spring has a sheet metal cover over it. I presume that mine must be a later version or something. All the picture/diagrams that I had come across show the spring exposed just like the one in your picture. This made me thing that something was missing.
Thanks for the help!!!
