Drive shaft

Unread post by ldj1002 » April 27th, 2010, 11:04 pm

I removed rear drive shaft from differential. I took bolts out of u joint and couldn't get it down without loosing differential and moving it a little. Putting it back, same thing, had to have differential loose. While tightening u joint bolts I striped one hole in yoke. Had to go through all that loosening differential again to get to where I could change yokes. I have never had to do that on any drive shaft before. Is this something common to the M151 or is something wrong. All others I've worked on had to have room for yokes, drive shaft or something to slide in and out of splines or something would bind. However the way this is built with that differential bolted to the body it doesn't need any movement there. Just wanted to check for sure. Boy, if that drive shaft was just 1/4" shorter it would make life a lot easier doing this. OH my Mutt hasn't been cut, so it isn't because the Mutt is shorter.

Something has moved dramatically in the drive train. Engine/transmission or diff. There should be enough give in the transmission end to enable the shaft to be installed.

The yoke should have enough movement/slide/play (in/out) to remove the driveshaft without anything else. Homegrown driveshaft to long maybe??

I had the same trouble. Yup, mine is cut, 1/2" sectioned out. I loosened both the motor and rear diff. and got it in with a little cussing and rolling b&f

Sorry, been working through bloodshot eyes recently. I WILL be done for Aberdeen or I will have it there along with a welder and generator so I can keep going once I get there! The only other thing I can think of is bad motor mounts. Do you have a lot of room in the front shaft? If so the entire powerpak is moved back on the mounts.

1st I removed both drive shafts to put tc seals in. It was when I was replacing the rear shaft I stripped the yoke. I said if I had just 1/4" more life would be a lot easier. Actually 1/8 or less it might be able to get out. It just barely won't pass. Do I have a lot of room on the front drive shaft-----well I didn't pay a lot of attention but I was able to remove it without any trouble. If I had the 1/8 to 1/4" more in the back and that made 1/8 to 1/4 less in front, I don't know if the problem would transfer to the front or if would I still be able to remove both. IE I don't know how much a lot is.

You may be able to just loosen the four motor and transmission mounts and shove the powerpack forward a 1/2 inch and tighten them back down.

Rick's suggestion makes the most sense to correct the problem. If the vehicle has not been cut a factory driveshaft should fit without any fussing. Just watch out if you try to move the powerpack.

Thanks for the tip in moving the power unit. I'll try that

Yes cstaup, I did read your post but I took it as that you moved them to get shafts out, not as a fix. After your questioning if I read the post, I read again and now I think you might have done it as a fix. However you can't move the differential as a permanent move as you can the power unit.

the dif had around 1/16th inch of play, couple that with the pack and you should be fine.
