Vinyl Top --How to clean

Unread post by ldj1002 » March 29th, 2010, 3:07 pm

My top has what looks like glue over the stitching. What can I use to remove that stuff? It also has what looks either mildew or maybe tree sap on it. Regular detergent won't remove it, what will?

Don't remove the "glue". It provides waterproofing to the seams. You can use anything from KrudKutter to trisodium phosphate to clean the black stuff, I use a soft brush and simple green.

I have also had good results with "Goo Gone". Other "Orange" based cleaners also work well. I do not recommend Acetone or other harsher chemicals.

I agree with Cstaup, the glue is part of the valued seam waterproofing. I have a few sets of new vinyl for my small motorpool, and one of the new tops I put on last year to run with the TMC 09 had daylight showing through in 9 places around the seams. Even at 50MPH in a driving rain failed to make those seams leak. I'd consider leaving it on, if water proofing is critical for your application.
