That explains things better + you took care of the low ratios by going on higher gears in the axles + you do not intend to do technical MOAB style rock crawling, rather want to go up a steep cliff, fast & loud.

Hey M151-LC, I have been following your build for a while now and have to say that it gave me inspiration for mine. Your LC is a little milder than mine, but awesome none the less. Did you ever finish it? I would love to see the stance with all four wheels under it. Also did you keep the wheelbase stock length?
There is a guy from Mexico City that posted on my build thread on Pirate4x4; he built a pretty wild M151 a few years ago. It had a 258 cu. in. strait 6 from a jeep (no idea how he got it to fit) and solid axles.

Here's a couple of good pics from the rear; I'll have about 8" from my head to the top tube.
Finally have a game plan for the rear, which required me to cut out this section of the unibody "frame" to make room for the rearend at full stuff. I also had to notch the outer rear frame rails to make room for the leaf spring pack, but this will give 2" more uptravel and still allow the bed floor to be flat (for the dogs).

Cut the rest of the dash out and put a couple more tubes going through the firewall to reinforce the front clip more, even though it's probably overkill.
Tubing will continuing rearwards from where the firewall tubes meet the lower dash tube; these will run between the seats and tie into the middle rear unibody rails.
3/16" plates will be cut to fit around all 4 tubes going through the firewall and will be welded to the unibody structure.
Middle tube of rear 1 link tacked on; this is about 2.5 inches from full compression.
Had to trim a little more on the original crossmember to make room for the one link tubes/driveshaft.
Here's the rough cut notches I made on the original rear "frame rails" for spring pack clearance at full bump.
The rear spring perch/crossmember fully welded and ready to go on permenantly.
Ruger, my shop dog always keeps me company (except while welding)

Hey everyone, I didn't forget about yall. Progress on the buggy has been pretty slow, but here are some recent pics.
View from the front. Most everything is fully welded now.
Overall shot of frontend tubework.
Bed area. Here you can see the rear leaf spring perch.
Transmission tunnel. The "top" tubes go through the firewall and tie into the frontend tubing.
Overall rear shot. Still needs a reciever hitch for a front/rear winch.
Interior, with the beginnings of an adjustable seat mount - the wife will be driving also . It will have a threaded adjuster inspired by the factory seat frames.
My dad gave me a dwell meter and timing light.... old school . Now I just need to learn how to use them.

Also I finished the front and rear axles/suspensions .
Frontend. Here you can really see how the suspension is going to work. The center of the leaf spring and the "one link" pivot are the only places the axle connects to the chassis, not counting shocks/brakelines.
Hydraulic high steer.
The front driveshaft is fully protected because of the centered front driveshaft output on the original trans/t-case.
Rearend, rear drivshaft is also fully protected.
Our little Mexican dog "Manchas" inspecting my work.
It's hard to tell from the pics, but the leaf spring is far enough back that it can compress all the way to a negative arch without contacting the rear axle housing or link bar. So this thing will have 14"-16" vertical suspension travel front and rear.
I didn't want the rear link bar to twist where it could contact the axle housing or leaf spring, so I reversed the safety washers next to the heim joints and sandwiched a fat O-ring between them.
Here is my rear disc brake conversion using 1980 Monte Carlo Calipers.

seems a shame to me that all that beautiful welding and design work in making a really capable vehicle will rely on 50+ year old 4 banger with 52 hp or whatever our engines put out. Keeping the orig body parts still keeps it in the M151 outlaw gang but with a major engine tranny upgrade you would have some thing exceptional. I must be missing the point.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....this is what we drove in the Seabees.......but with a hammer attached on the side ! Nice overall project.....just "really" over the top ! I still like OD tho...Seabee

Options for a engine/trans that will fit well are very limited, and I refuse to put an import engine/trans in it. Honestly, with the relatively slow speed terrain it will be used on, I'm more concerned with the lack of low range than the lack of power. The original engine had a lot going for it, first and foremost it was free, which is a huge plus in a $3500 project; and it's also waterproof. With the propane conversion it performs better than fuel injection; quick throttle response, no stumbling, and it will run upside-down.
