Transmission Rebuild and Manual

Unread post by Lou » November 25th, 2024, 10:07 pm

So after 10,000 miles off road on a NOS transmission, it has issues. Has a loud low pitched whine when in neutral with the clutch out. Push the clutch in the noise goes away. The noise gets louder in lower gears with the clutch out. Transmission shifts fine does not jump out of gear and all synchros work in all gears. When changing the oil earlier this year found metal particles on the magnetic drain plug. And I even added an extra quart of oil through the shift tower.

It sounds like bad input shaft bearings to me, what do the mutt transmission gurus think? Since the noise gets louder on each outing, need to take it apart and fix it before it self destructs. The manual I have has basic information but found there is a better manual.

Does anyone have a pdf of TM 9-2520-218-34? This manual goes into great detail of the rebuild.

Take Care,
Louie

Don't you mean 2320-218-34? You may also want to get the -34P if you do not have it. The "P" is the parts manual and has nice exploded views of all the parts. Nice for getting it together correctly.

I would take George up on that offer, while these are basic transmissions they are really packed together in that case.

George,
Yes, please pm me your information, can use all the help I can get!

Rick,
There was a thread here https://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=251743 and now believe depthcharge used the wrong TM number.

Interestingly, Gavin replied to my quest on Facebook and turned me on to another version TM-9 2320-218-34, 1972 version. The one I have (that went under water during sandy) is TM-9 2320-218-34-1 a newer version. Both manuals have their differences, the older one has photos, the newer one has diagrams. Using both together helps.

Thanks for the tip using the parts manual diagrams.... very Big Help!

I have an idea on what killed the transmission. It was fine until the oil was changed earlier this year, no noise, no issues. Many recommend adding some extra oil in the trans for longevity. That was done on the last change 5 years ago, no issues. This time believe I got carried away and added more oil than the previous 2 changes.

My theory is that since the main shaft is lubricated by the dipper and splash, adding too much oil submersed the dipper too much. Thus reducing the amount of splash action. Sounds crazy, but this is what I believe occurred. The trans was NOS with 10,000 miles on it.

Also considering using a better quality oil suggested in this thread https://www.g838.org/viewtopic.php?p=12 ... il#p121347

Anyone have opinions on this stay-lube (crc) GL-4 SAE 85W90 ? Was using 85W140 like in the Diff’s and this probably added to the no splash issue.

OMG it actually exists! Do you have a PDF or a paper copy? :?: Since it is a field manual is it worth having? Believe it would have less information than the rebuild manual.

Wow! when I searched that number it came back to some sort of automatic used in tracks.

Louie, Do you have any of the manuals? I have the -34P and several different years of the others. I cannot e-mail large files though. I had all of those manuals on the site for a while but I was getting killed by people downloading 10 at a time. All going to one ip address. So I had to take them offline to preserve bandwidth.

I just noticed that Dan's manual is a different number, Right manual but different number.

Yes Rick,
Have the paper manuals kind of warped from getting wet from sandy, was drying them out in front of the furnace, lol. Just ordered new binders, the ones I had are rusting apart. For the parts not legible in the paper manuals will print from the PDF's downloaded from Pedro's site. Thanks for your offer.

Here is a post I found on the G503 from Muttguru that will have you searching for the rest of your life.

Ralph,
What I'm looking for is the engine overhaul manual. I've never been able to find a manual specifically for overhauling the engine or transmission.
Kurt,

they did exist......you need to search for:-

TM 9-2520-231-34
Field Maintenance Manual: Transmission and Transfer Assembly: End Item Application: Truck, Utility, 1/4-Ton, 4x4, M151.

TM 9-2520-231-34P
Field Maintenance Repair Parts and Special Tools List: Transmission and Transfer Assembly: End Item Application: Truck, Utility 1/4-Ton, 4x4, M151.

TM 9-2805-213-34
Field Maintenance Manual: Engine Assembly and Clutch: End item Application: Truck, Utility, 1/4-Ton, 4x4, M151.

TM 9-2805-213-34P
Field Maintenance Repair Parts and Special Tools List: Engine Assembly and Clutch: End item Application: Truck, Utility, 1/4-Ton, 4x4, M151.

There's also:-

TM 9-2520-230-34
Field Maintenance Manual, Front and Rear Suspension and Drive Assemblies (incl. Service Brakes, Wheels and Tires): End Item Application: Truck, Utility, 1/4-Ton, 4x4, M151.

TM 9-2520-230-34P
Field Maintenance Repair Parts and Special Tools List: Front and Rear Suspension and Drive Assemblies (incl. Service Brakes, Wheels and Tires): End Item Application: Truck, Utility, 1/4-Ton, 4x4, M151.

These "specific" TMs were eventually integrated into the -34 and -34P series.

Hope this helps.......

This is a paper copy, I "had" the hard copy and sent it to a member on here about 5, 6 years ago to make copies, he sent me a copy back instead of my hard copy then disappeared. It is worth having if you are going to tackle doing the repair yourself. there are step by step instructions and "part" numbers also has the torques.

If you could get it scanned to a pdf file I would pay for the work so I could add it to our manuals collection. If the donations warrant it I will be able to upgrade the site to the next level and that will give me more features to make things better for all the members. I would then be able to have different levels of membership and I could limit any outside theft of the manuals.

That is exactly what I need to be more comfortable with the rebuild, very good illustrations. If you do not have a way to scan it, places like staples can do it for a reasonable cost. Rick said he would pay for the scan, I would be willing to pay for the scan as well. Had the misfortune of rebuilding a turbo 400 automatic transmission and forgot a thrust washer :( So had to pull it back out and start over. That manual would really help to double check my work, there is plenty of places to screw it up, lol
