Oils and lubricants question
New owner of a M151A2 Can you guys kindly tell me the types of oils and lubricants needed for the M151A2 please. Thank you very much. Rob
Re: Oils and lubricants question
You will want this document. I'm sure some of the other guys will be along shortly with their advice for ya. There are some modern equivalent gear and engine oil that folks use so we'll leave that to the experts to explain.

Re: Oils and lubricants question
I use the Rotella 15W-40 for engine oil since the diesel oils have more zinc in them for flat tappet lifters. Alternative to that would be a good motor oil in the grade that suits you operating temps and the addition of a ZDDP additive for the needed zinc. Be aware, more is not better with this additive!!! Read the directions closely for the proper ratio.
Gear oil we generally recommend to stay away from GL-5 oils due to problems in transmissions with the yellow metals degrading. GL-5 in most name brands will have the MT-1 additive to prevent this from happening but I recommend you stay with a GL-4 rated oil in the 85W-90 range or above. Raymond may chime in on this since he was in the oil business and he knows all of the ins and outs.

Hey Guano!!
I was a newbie / still am as of last October. You're going to have a love hate relationship with your Mutt as I suspect. I love mine when I look at it in the garage and drive it but hate it when working on it. Maybe cause I'm not young anymore and I feel as though I went five rounds with Mike Tyson after under / up to grab tools / under / up to grab paper towels / under... you get it. I went through this last winter in Ohio. Did a lot of reading and of course recommendations from this forum. Here's what I used in mine.
Oil Rotella T1 / SAE 30 with 1 pint Marvel mystery oil.
Transfer case / differentials / transmission Lucas 80W-90
Coolant Prestone all vehicle / premixed in the bottle
Traveller NLGI # 2 grease for the wheel bearings
Marine & off-road grease NLGI # 2 for the U-Joints
Do yourself a favor and remove the transmission cover when you fill the transmission it's be easier from the top than pumping from the bottom.
I learned a lot during the winter and if you need help shoot me a message and I'll be happy to help however I can.
