Transmission in 2nd Gear

Unread post by Mark » April 13th, 2024, 5:34 pm

When I have the mutt pointed up a slight hill, in 2nd gear, not running, I let the clutch out, the jeep rolls backwards. Is the compression so low, the engine won't hold the jeep stationary?
Ok, I just remembered a while back, I couldn't get right amount of free play, so I been driving it for short trips during the day.So maybe the fingers of the clutch are pressed enough to let the wheels move thru the drive train. There is no slipping when driving the jeep. There is no free play now.So I guess I'll attempt to have more free play in the clutch, The adjustment is probably at its max.So I'll drive it until it won't move anymore would be the common sense answer, but then again I don't want to tear up my fly wheel.

Compression will not hold you on a hill, it eventually bleeds past the rings and then spins to the next cylinder. By then there is usually enough momentum to keep the engine spinning. If you have to do that use first or reverse since they are the lowest gears. But if you do not use the parking brake you always need to chock the wheels. No free play in the clutch is not good but if it isn't slipping while driving it certainly is not slipping when parked.
