MUTT JUMPING (and battery boosting)

Unread post by ODRotorHead » April 6th, 2024, 11:49 pm

This past January someone relatively new to the M151 asked for help with a Jump Starting question. He jokingly said, "You will need crayons to draw me a picture." Humor aside, it can be a confusing and potentially dangerous issue to work through when you're not familiar with 24V systems. Since I do have a box of crayons though, I thought I'd give it a try . . .

The following are five first drafts of battery graphics covering the most common jump starting/battery boosting situations.

Please let me know if you find any errors or have suggestions for improvement. I'll update the graphics as necessary.

hi

nice to see this

if both battery's are empty
if you have only a 12 volt car to help
put the cables like the last drawing at one battery
let the engine from the helping car run to load the empty battery
if it has run for 10-15 min take the cables off and put them at the other battery`
load it up and start

if you have battery's where you can look in
if you start and the water inside is bubbling at a compartment this one has a short

Thanks for that information George.

I'm not knowledgeable about these matters (my lawyer told me to say that) so I didn't dare address "boosting" from a 12V vehicle. To be honest, since 24V doesn't play well with 12V, one minor error with a set of jumper cables could result in the 12V vehicle's entire electrical system being fried. If someone uses his Bugatti La Voiture Noire (I had to look that up) to boost his MUTT and has a bad outcome, he'll probably blame me and I'll be in a whole lot of trouble.

: )

You have to very careful jumping from another car. As long as you attach the cables directly to the battery you are charging then you are fine but if you go by the book and put the positive on the battery and the negative on a good ground on the body then you could have a problem. If you are jumping the left, or inside battery and you ground to the body you will fry your cars alternator and possibly blow the battery up because you will be jumping 12 volts to 24 volts. If you jump the left battery then ground to the body I believe you will be ok but it is not a chance you should take. Only go to the terminals of the one battery you are jumping and you are assured of a 12 volt connection.
