M151A2 Fuel Pump Connections

Unread post by glcaines » March 31st, 2024, 10:06 am

The fuel pump inlet connection on my M151A2 faces straight out towards the fender, forcing the flexible fuel line to make a very sharp bend toward the rear where it connects to the steel fuel line. I replaced the short flexible portion of the fuel line with an NOS line because the original was cracking and close to rupturing. Of course, the new line is also forced into a tight bend which will shorten it's life. There is a straight brass fitting that screws into the fuel pump that serves as an adapter that the flexible fuel line screws into. The TM doesn't show this fitting, but it is required because the fitting on the fuel line is larger than the threaded hole in the fuel pump. I'm looking for a replacement fitting that is 45 deg instead of the current 180 deg that would relieve most of the stress on the fuel line. I could also use a 90 deg fitting but this would place the fuel line very close to the engine oil dipstick.

Is that a factory military pump or a Dodge 6 cylinder replacement? I have a couple of original pumps and when I go outside I will look to see how the lines are routed. That does not look right top me. That rubber line looks like the vapor return line for and A2 from the carb back to the tank.

Here are the pics of a NOS pump, the fittings are the same. I will do a bit more searching to see what and where the factory lines should run. Mine is an A1 so I can't go by that.

Here is an enhanced diagram that our member Odrotorhead has made for the vehicles. It shows a flexible line from the bulkhead to the pump. But for some reason I seem to remember that being a steel line. Anyone with an A2 here that can tell us is there? Note that this diagram is for the pre-emissions setup.

P/N for that hose is 7062167-1 (19207) as per T M9 2320-218-20P Sep. 25 1974.

Ok, I was pretty sure the Dodge pump had the slip fit connection.

After checking some more that hose is the same one as listed for the vapor return line so it is the same hose for both places.

The rubber line connects directly to the steel line in the right front wheel well. The steel line is routed correctly and there is no way to make it longer. Even if it was longer, there would still be a fairly sharp bend in the rubber line at the fuel pump. The bottom line is that they should have used a 45 or 90 deg elbow at the fuel pump.

my 151 has this 90° fitting. This is the original pump from the factory.

Thanks. I also have an original fuel pump, but no elbow. I've been looking for an elbow like that only 45 deg instead of 90 deg but have almost given up. Yours looks just like the elbow on the carburetor for the A1. Your fuel line is under minimal bending stress. I was afraid that a 90 deg elbow would cause interference with the dipstick and oil filter, but your photo shows that it doesn't interfere as much as I thought. I'm going to purchase a 90 deg elbow like you have if I can't find a 45 deg elbow. I believe the P/N is 10921892 for the 90 deg. elbow. I find it also interesting that the TM doesn't show the required adapter to screw the fuel line into the fuel pump.

I couldn't find a pic of an A2 with a 90" elbow, had me wondering if mine was correct.

I have many pumps here and all of them have the straight fittings. That 90 is a hardware store item so it would not be hard to replace it. You should be able to find a 45 degree fitting at the hardware store also. If it exists then McMaster-Carr has it.

I found a 45 degree fitting at the local fastener store to use with my NOS pump. It produces a nice bend around the firewall and clears the dipstick without putting excessive stress on the line:

I went ahead and ordered a 45 deg elbow from McMaster-Carr (50785K81) after my local hardware store was out. I received the 45 deg elbow yesterday and put it on. You still need the old 1/4 X 1/8 adapter or replace it with a new one if your elbow is 1/8 X 1/8 like mine was. As ODRotorHead indicated above, this is a tremendous improvement. I would recommend everyone with an M151A2 or with an earlier M151 with a mechanical fuel pump to make this modification and avoid a potential fuel line break.
