Durability of Original M151A2 Fuel Pump

Unread post by glcaines » September 24th, 2023, 9:35 am

I plan on attending the Southeast Military Vehicle Rally, formerly the Georgia Military Vehicle Rally, in Oliver Springs, Tennessee at Windrock Park. I was originally going to trailer the M151A2 up on my XM1061E1 trailer, pulled by my M35A3. However, that is a lot of weight to pull through the mountains, so now I'm considering simply driving the M151A2 up to the rally, pulling my M416 trailer, which would be a ~300-mile drive round trip, plus local miles driven at the rally. The empty trailer alone weighs 5500 pounds. My M151a2 runs very well, and I've already put over 500 miles on it since acquisition. My potential concern is the fuel pump. The fuel pump really looks like it is original to the engine. The fuel pump works fine with no leaks, but I'm wondering if I should obtain a new replacement fuel pump and at least take it with me in case of potential failure of the old fuel pump. I'm confident the M151A2 will make the trip, aside from the fuel pump, albeit a slow trip.

Whenever taking a long trip you should have a spare parts kit with you to especially include a coil, points or electronic module, Input capacitor for the distributor (or just bypass the cap beforehand, it is not needed), Fuel filters Fuel pump belts fluids couple spark plugs and the tools needed to do these jobs. It sounds like a lot but it will all fit in a 50 cal. ammo can. Rags and hand cleaner also. As far as pulling with the M35 you are talking 7500 lbs. total. Not really a lot for the A3 which if I remember correctly has the Cat engine?

Yes, the M35A3 has the Cat 3116 engine with an Allison 1545 transmission. I may go ahead and pull the M151A2 on the trailer. My M35A3 is 100% dependable and if something happens to the 1/4 ton while trail riding, I can at least get it home easily. At this point in time I have zero spare parts.
Thanks Rick.
