Canvas or Vinyl Seats

Unread post by glcaines » August 3rd, 2023, 3:37 pm

I have a 1979 M151A2 that currently has vinyl seats with drastically different colors of vinyl. I also have a vinyl top that is in perfect condition. The seat vinyl is in good condition except for a lot of stains. In addition, I am missing the rear bottom seat cushion - I have two rear seat backs. I've decided to replace the entire set of all 6 cushions. However, I haven't decided on whether to replace with vinyl or canvas. When I was on active duty in the U.S. Army, everything was canvas. Any pros and cons with both? I still remember canvas smelling, especially the tops and tents, so that is a possible con.

I supposed, that A2 was always with vinyl?? Maybe Im wrong. I have experience only with canvas - much more confortable, no intertrigo.
But in the rain vinyl is better. Now choose!!

weebee webbing did my seats in canvas, back when i had my A1. on many events, and displays, you always knew who the vets were, because they would stick their head in and take a deep breath of that canvas aroma. they did a great job, and they held up well. the guy i sold it to is still driving it around, and that was 10 years ago.

Are you kidding?!!! That is THE one thing that brings back the essence of the military for me. The smell of the canvas. It never changes. Plus, on hot steamy days there is nothing like sitting in a puddle of your own sweat on vinyl! No thanks, canvas all the way. I would stay with vinyl for the top just due to maintenance and cost. If you ever put the top down for more than a day then getting it back up can be quite a chore with canvas.

I seem to remember reading somewhere, the canvas seats/tops in Vietnam rotted quicker cuz of them being wet a lot, of course that depended on the location?

Canvas definitely rotted in the jungles. Last time I checked we were not in jungle weather yet. And according to the greenies we never will be, we are all going to shrivel up and die from lack of water.

I think I remember several scenes in Judge Dredd where some babes were wrapped in vinyl, instead of canvas. I think vinyl achieves a better overall effect.. But hey, that's just me.

Look at it this way, To make it correct for an A2 get vinyl. To make it comfortable to sit on for long periods and even very short periods in hot temperatures then get canvas. Top I would go with vinyl both for accuracy and also price and care factor. Canvas will last forever if taken care of and you aren't in a steamy jungle but man, if you ever put it down for a couple days getting it stretched back to get it on!!!!!!!!!!!! That said, you can't beat canvas for a nice tight fit. All the vinyl tops I have seen have been loose fitting.
