My M151

Unread post by FoxMike » July 22nd, 2023, 5:09 pm

Thought I would post about the M151A2 I acquired this past winter. I have been wanting another jeep since having to sell the 1952 M38A1 about 10 years ago. Decided to go with a M151 this time due to my interest in Cold War history. I've spent 16+ years in the USAF, but the M151 was before my time in the service.

It sat in the garage the first few months due to the salt on the roads. Took it on a few short trips early in the spring. On one of the first warmer days, I filled up the tank and headed out for a drive. Not too long after, the engine started to sputter and then died. Couldn't get it started for more than a few seconds. Noticed the fuel filter had debris. Got a tow home, luckily only a few miles away. Thought it might have been the aftermarket electric fuel pump. Started to investigate and found the fuel tank with a good amount of rust and gunk in there. Replaced the tank (yikes $$), cap, rubber fuel hoses, fuel lines, fuel pickup/tank filter, removed the emissions fuel contraptions, switched back to mechanical fuel pump. Also had the carb rebuilt (thanks RickF for the advice).

Started discovering some more things amiss while getting to know the vehicle. Replaced all rubber brake hoses, adjusted brakes, replaced rear differential seal, tightened loose bolts, oil/filter change. Checked the radiator...uh oh, rusty water. Flushed the system and replaced with fresh coolant.

There is a military surplus store close to where I grew up. Hadn't been there in close to 20 years. Went there on whim to check things out. After browsing around for 30 minutes, I started to head out the door with my few small purchases. Right there by the door was a RT-524 radio marked at a very good price! What a find. Already had the base mount, so in the jeep it went.

I am not a mechanic or anything, but learn by reading/watching and doing. Already learned a lot by working on this M151. It helps to have a mechanic in the family, so lots of advice there. Thanks to everyone who has posted all these good threads here. They really help out as I like to read up as much as possible before diving into a project.
I'll probably post the happenings with the jeep on this thread as time progresses. Here's a picture from after I got it home. There was a big ice storm here and it came in handy to tow branches to the burn pile.

Don't be shy. We'll either talk you through it, or talk you down from the rafters before you decide to hang yourself. It's all part of the service this forum provides.

i strongly recommend using the proper manuals to take you through the removal and replacement process. it's really not that difficult, and the book spells it out in detail. all you need are basic hand tools and an engine hoist of some sort. the manuals are available right here.

Ron, I had to take the manuals down due to excessive abuse of the privilege. People were downloading 20 to 30 manuals a day and overloading the system. You know that was not for personal use. Unfortunately, again, the bad apples ruin it for the good people. You can still download the manuals from Pedro's site at pedros.cz.

The weather cooled down this week so I went out for a daytime drive. With the top on it is quite nice.

Went to the local car show today in my other hobby car. Someone showed up in a M151A1! He lives about 10 miles from me. Nice to know there's someone else nearby. Apparently I've been spotted driving around because he was wondering who else was driving a 151 around the county.

That's always nice to know, but kind of a weird feeling as well.

For some time now, my Jeep's doppelgänger was up for sale on one of the county back roads. We drove by there recently and found it being driven away by the new owner. Now it's back in the wild again. Oddly, I felt better knowing where it was.

Cheers,
TJ

Getting these nice drives in while the weather is still good. Went down to the local lake. There is a park on one portion of it with a nice winding road that goes up and down a hill. Great for slow speeds.

Went down to the lake this evening. There was a nice sunset and the leaves are turning colors on the trees. Earlier in the day, I got a red reflector sticker in the mail for the spare tire plate and installed that. All of 5 minutes of work, but I have been driving sometimes in the early evening and it's nice to have some extra visibility.
