Recently Acquired M416 Trailer

Unread post by glcaines » July 20th, 2023, 4:04 pm

When I purchased my M151A2 near the first of 2023, I also received an M416 trailer which was included in the sale. I actually was given the choice of three different M416 trailers, all of which were reasonable, but I picked what I thought was the best. The trailer had been stored indoors in a warehouse and is in very good condition with only a very little surface rust here and there only, no significant rust. The original Cooper military tires are decades old, but look almost new. I've attached photos of what it looked like when I received it. I greased all of the zerks when I received it and pressure washed it top and bottom. Very little rust on the bottom. The parking brake functioned OK and all of the lights worked. The drain valves all work fine. It has currently been sent out to a friend for sandblasting and priming. I will apply 34079 Forest Green paint when I get it back from the sandblasting, which will match the color of my M151A2. I covered the dataplate with multiple layers of duct tape to protect it during the sandblasting. I pulled the trailer 84 miles for the sandblasting. I haven't re-packed the bearings yet, but the hubs didn't even get warm. It pulled very well by my F250. I'll repack the bearings when I get it back. It only came with a Bill of Sale, but that is all I needed in Georgia to get a tag.

I know that Ken likes to receive data on M416 trailers, so here goes.

6U4028 is painted on the inside rear of right side top of the tub
Paint is 3-color camo in CARC
The original dataplate is present, but very hard to read.

Hello Gary,

many thanks for the details of the trailer. Here is an extra detail that you may not be able to make out on your plate. The NSN for the trailer is 2330-706-5495. The screen-printed details on the dataplates of trailers deteriorate very quickly and the only way to protect them is to remove and store them out of sunlight. The Stevens Mfr. contract started in January 1967 and was still delivering in late 1967 (Sept-Oct). The company received another order for M416 trailers in 1969. There seems to be a huge gap in trailer contracts after 1970, with the next (and last) contract being awarded to Parkhurst Manufacturing in June 1978.....for M416A1 trailers.

Thanks again Gary, looks like you have a very nice trailer.
Ken
