Trailer lights

Unread post by Fred » February 21st, 2009, 12:43 pm

Hi,
Please bear with me as this is my first post.
I will be getting my M151A2 on Wed. Occasionally I will be towing a 4'x6' trailer behind it. the trailer was purchased from tractor supply and has a four pin light connecter (3 female, 1 male). How can I adapt it to the A2's trailer light input?
Thanks in advance,
Fred

the easiest way would be to make an adapter using a military trailer plug, and the female flat four,if you don't want to modify your trailer, or just use a military trailer cable from a M416 etc. you would also need to change the bulbs in the lights to 24 volt to match your jeep. I'm assuming you are only using the trailer with the jeep.

Fred

Welcome to G838 :D Go to the top of this page and click on resource list. It will take you to a section that lists most of the M151 parts suppliers. Some of the ones I have used and been very pleased with include (in no particular order) Saturn Surplus, Fronline Military Vehicles, and TNJ Murray. (If you use Murray's, make sure you talk to John) Most of them should have a plug from a M416 trailer. You can use that to make an adapter for your current trailer. Or, if you plan on pulling the trailer with other vehicles, you can leave what you have intact and add a second trailer light system by buying the whole trailer lighting kit for an M416 jeep trailer. If you go the adapter route, you will need a wiring schematic which is contained in the training manuals. Fortunately, we here at G838 also have most of the TMs available as a free PDF format download. It is at the top of this page under the heading "Manuals". I would recommend you download TM 9-2320-218-20-1-1 May 82 Volume 1 and TM 9-2320-218-20-1-2 May 82 Volume 2. These manuals will tell you how to fix most everything on an M151a2. They will also have the wiring schematic for making your trailer adapter. I would also download TM 9-2320-218-20P Dec78 Parts as it will show you most of the parts and part numbers for the M151. These are called the 20 manuals. The 34 series manuals go into more detail on how to repair sub assemblies (such as starters, alternators, etc.) that the 20 series manuals tell you to remove and replace. Again, welcome and post pictures of your M151 when you get it.

Welcome Fred, Where are you located? I tow a 20 foot trailer with my CUCV and I got a trailer harness and cut the trailer end off and used the wires I needed. On the CUCV there is a constant power wire that is handy for a work lite mounted on the trailer. I don't think the Mutt has that wire.
