Yup, Thick Bondo is great for holding water against the metal until the metal is no longer there. Correct use of Bondo is to only fill scratches and grind marks from metalwork. Proper bodywork should prevent thick Bondo application.

Not using Bondo is why we spend so much time on the metalwork.

Bondo is great for minor imperfections as Rick said, I've peeled it off 1/2" thick :roll: , you can use a little heat and scrape it off, make sure to wear a respirator.

If you look way back on my thread Ricks restoration, you will see where I peeled and chipped off bondo that was literally 23/4 inch thick on a front fender! I then managed to shrink that fender top to the point where I only needed a skim coat to cover some minor rust pits.

My buddy is 1000% against filler of any kind. I understand it but I think there are uses for it, like scratches. Trying to fill all of the tiny weld pits or rusty surface with weld is not worth the time it would take.

At least we aren't trying to braze things to fill surfaces. One front fender and both back fender edges have braze fills which are coming apart.

You never braze on a body except to join panels. Brazing takes too much heat and will warp, shrink or stretch panels. If metal is used instead of Bondo it is lead. I learned with lead. It is hot and laborious not to mention a bit poisonous, but it will last forever.

Rust never stops. If I put bondo over any metal that did not have all the rust eliminated or patched. I would be reminded if it each time I looked or or drove the vehicle.
