These have been around for many years and they do work well BUT, What they are not showing you on the video is the fact that you need to hook up both spools on both front or both rear wheels unless you have a locker type rear differential. With an open differential the tire with the least traction will spin so a spool on one tire will just sit there while the other tire spins. The next problem would be do they have a setup for the mutt bolt pattern? Keep us informed.

The plan is to fabricate one of my own for the Mutt, keeping in mind the lugs.
Also test it on by putting it on the spinning wheel, so when it spins without traction, its pulls the MUTT out.
Let's see if the tests pass ;)

wheel winches were issued for the mutts by the canadian armed forces. they work just fine apparently.... If you check canadian mutt parts dealers like Niagara Surplus you might not need to fabricate anything....

Jim,
I'll check those out but man, getting them shipped from there is gonna cost me an arm and a leg. Better to fabricate here. I bet I can make a dozen outta that amount.

Why use the wheel spools when you can use a portable winch?

If you're stuck bad enough to need help out, you might have a hard time getting to all the lugs anyway.

I have this one: http://www2.northerntool.com/winches/dc ... -14293.htm

It is light weight but strong enough to pull a Mutt out of just about anything. You can quick mount it on the front or on the pintle hook in the back.

They make bigger, stonger, more expensive ones but i've never had an issue with the one above.

Mine is painted OD green.

You have never been stuck in clay mud have you? It would take a 5000 lb. doubled up or at least an 8000 lb. single line to pull you out of clay mud. Once you sink it forms a suction and then flows around everything.

You're right, i've never been stuck in clay. I didn't think it would be that difficult to egress from clay with a 5000 lb winch.

Here is a post from the 503 about that wheel winch: http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

As usual I can't get on 503. I think I posted in that one also. The only thing you have to remember is that if you have an open rear or even most limited slips you will have to use a winch hub on the rear (or front) tire on both sides. Then you just run your rope around whatever and back to the opposite side of the vehicle. If you have a locker you can use on wheel but it is going to put a hell of strain on that axle!

I do have a manual locker on the back. So if i were to use a wheel winch, or even a cargo strap wrapped around the wheel, it would have to be on both wheels?

No, One wheel would work in your case but unless it is an easy stuck you will surely grenade the axle u-joint. The axle was never designed for that kind of load. When an axle joint breaks under heavy load it almost always takes out the yokes so the entire axle is junk at that point.
