Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
There are many different rifles with the same name name but you just can't say 30 caliber or "M1". (imo). and they don't fire the same round.
M1 Garand..30.06
M1 carbine 30 cal. (pistol round) imo
M1a aka M-14.. 30 cal...308 aka 7.62
M1 Garand..30.06
M1 carbine 30 cal. (pistol round) imo
M1a aka M-14.. 30 cal...308 aka 7.62
Re: Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
You are forgetting one, AK47 in 7.62 and several other European guns chambered in 7.62.
You call the 30 carbine a pistol round, can you name a pistol that shoots that round?

Re: Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
Well, you guys might as well consider adding the BAR and the Browning 1919A6 (which is only barely a 'rifle')
Re: Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
Or the Springfield 03 series but they are also 30-06 and used the same cartridge and load as the 1919 and the BAR. The M1 used the same cartridge as the 03 after the WWI ammo was depleted and they went to M2 Ball ammo. There is massive debate on what can or cannot be used in the M1 Garand as far as ammo. KISS works for me, load it exactly the same as it was designed for and shot extremely accurately with.

Re: Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
That is a rare bird, I gather quite an audience when I take mine to the range. Nobody there has ever seen one in 30 carbine. And there are some old time gun guys there including one who worked at Thompson Center for 30 some years.
Here is the military side of the arsenal, rifles anyway. And here is my Blackhawk

Re: Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
Hitting the CMP forums, they recommend that any 150 to 180 grain commercially available ammo will do just nicely in any of the .30 caliber toys - be it a Krag, M1903, M1917 Enfield, M1917 or M1919 series machine guns: 1903A3 or A4, M1 Garand, BAR or the Johnson rifle of 1941! Enjoy all the flavors!!!

Re: Lets talk M1's and 30 caliber ammo
I always shot 168 gr. in competition back in the late 60's but I have been experimenting with 150 gr. lately. And I aim for 2600 FPS so I am nowhere near pushing the limits on the pressures.

30 cal. Carbine was not a tapered round. There are Plenty 30 carbine pistols out there. Here is one...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML-E4uRrEaw
