Re: mutt engine
Not a patrol boat but a small boat built by some of my friends with the 458th Sea Tigers in Vietnam. Short was powered by a MUTT engine. The trailer was "borrowed" from a ROK unit. Ted Faurbo was a LARC coxswain. LARCs were called upon to haul the trash out to sea. Ted convinced the ROKs to hoist the whole trailer onto his LARC so he and crew wouldn't have to double handle the trash. Unfortunately the ROK's trailer was "lost at sea" during the mission. https://www.boatbuilders.glen-l.com/tin ... n-michigan
Ted has also had a book published about his time in Vietnam https://www.amazon.com/Serving-458th-Me ... 1530749727

Re: mutt engine
What ever happened to the boat? Obviously it did not come back with them.

Rick,
When Ted rotated home, he sold his interest in the boat for a few bucks and cigarettes to someone else. I'll ask the guys if anyone knows of the final disposition of the boat. During Vietnamization, everything was stripped from the land at Cam Ranh Bay. Another friend, Tom Farrell and crew were the last Army PBR there, with no on shore support. Tom tells the story of riding out a typhoon on the PBR before they were finally moved out. Here is a better story of the boat that I posted several years ago. If the pics don't show, the icons are still an active link to the pictures. http://g838.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9493&p=80265#p80265

Re: mutt engine
I'm going to see a hull identification number, marine survey, and certification of seaworthiness

Re: mutt engine
Rick,
I got this response from Ted about what happened to the boat: "I have been asking and never got an answer to what happened to it. I sold my share to somebody for something like 15 dollars a few days before I left Nam. I also sold my snub nosed 32, was afraid to try and carry it, or ship it home. Wife mailed gun to me in pieces. Seem to remember she sent barrel portion wrapped in tooth past tube. Boat was in rough shape when I left. Screws were rusting and loose This is where it was in company area just before I left. I would guess it did not stay there long after Captain Gruff was replaced."

Re: mutt engine
So he is saying it was used hard and put away wet. They must have built it pretty quick to have gotten any real fun time out of it before shipping out. Sadly it was probably sent out on it's own and used for target practice.
