M416 paint question

Unread post by Cav Trooper » May 15th, 2018, 2:59 pm

I have my M151A2 on the way in a few weeks and painted 34094 "383". I just purchased an M416 in 24087 or close and older paint possibly original. I want to scuff it and repaint to match the MUTT. Is there a preferred primer sealer for the Gillespie alkyd paint? I will scuff, tack and dewax as much as possible top and bottom and do a full shoot but want to try to make sure it doesn't peel off. I don't have the facility to media blast and the present paint to pretty solid, no flaking. Wheels, wiring and attachments will be removed for paint.
Thanks,
CT

Are you sure the present paint is not CARC? Most of the later military paint jobs were but if it is it will be marked CARC and a date somewhere. If it is CARC you do NOT want to sand it dry due to the heavy metals in the paint. And no paint is going to adhere to it. CARC= Chemical Agent Resistant Coating. It is dangerous stuff to work with when it comes to restoration and a lot of people do not realize that.

If it is an ordinary paint and you are not going to sand down to the metal then you will need a primer sealer. The epoxies are best.
