Andy (shortleg) posted a help notice about his M151A1 stuck in 4WD recently. He very kindly sent his dataplate details for my research and I'm very pleased, but he will be even more pleased on account of his dashplate being the correct one for his body-tag ! And here they are............below.
He tells me he bought the vehicle (a final-production M151A1) in pieces, in September 2015. The previous owner intended to replace some sheet metal but unfortunately never got to complete the job. I'm sure Andy will sort that out.
Thanks Andy.

Isn't that quite a few too many digits in the serial number?

Re: It's a Match !
Rick, it's bang-on correct for the 68 Ford contract. The hood number would have read 02BE 3769 (not the whole of the serial number).

Re: It's a Match !
OK, So now, as usual, I am cornfused, again. When did the military, outside of the Marines, go to 13 digits in the serial numbers? I have not seen that on any others.

Re: It's a Match !
Hi Rick, by April 1968, the numbering system was at the "2R xxxx" stage for 1/4-tonners but the Mil decided that it was time for a new numbering system. In addition to prefixing the ID with the number 0 (zero), the year of delivery was also added (68 at the time).rickf wrote:When did the military, outside of the Marines, go to 13 digits in the serial numbers?
The big change was that there were only 999 numbers used before the change to the next prefix letter.
eg 02A 99968 went to 02B 00168.
The earlier system allowed for 9999 numbers to be used before the letter changed.
It should have dawned on someone in the Mil that using only 999 numbers would, during a huge buildup of vehicles at the time, rapidly use up the numbering system. By June the following year, the single-letter sequence had been exhausted and there was only one way to go..... switch to TWO letters. Added to the shorter lifespan of numbering sequences was the fact that at 31-Dec-1968, the suffix had to change to "69". This is where Andy's late M151A1 ended up being assigned the hood number 02BE 3769.
To add to the mayhem, it was decided to add a unique vehicle ID number (much like the ID number used later by AMGeneral) and that's the "27390" on Andy's plate. In my view, this new numbering system is (or was) great for dating vehicles, unless the plate is missing (or swapped for one from a different vehicle) and then it's back to searching for a body-tag.
