Radio Location

Unread post by Cobra5 » November 16th, 2008, 10:33 pm

What side of the vehicle would the radio normally be mounted? I know everyone I've seen have been mounted on the right side. Well today I was looking over my A-1 and I noticed that it was drilled on the left side. Would the military ever have installed a radio on the left side or maybe a radio on each side? BTW the radio mount on my A-1 is on the right side.

Hi m-11, the radios could be mounted on either side or across the back bolted to both sides, I think it depented on the type of radio. here's a photo of one we had in Germany.

and a photo of one on the right side with an xtra speaker and a short antenna.

It was a matter of convenience too, if the jeep was normally operated by one person, the radio was mounted on the right which allowed the driver to reach over to change freq's etc. It also counterbalanced the weight of the driver a little, which was better than putting all the weight on one side. If the jeep normally was used with a passenger, such as a Sgt or Officer, the radio would go on the left to be more convenient to the passenger. Re-transmission jeeps which were used like a mobile repeater system, had two radios, one on each side. Comm jeeps, used by forward air controllers etc, had a large radio rack mounted across the back, and the passenger seat faced the rear.

The radios being used in both photos are old family type GRC instead of VRC the antenna mounts are holding AB-15 bases and correct for the early M151's very cool early pics. Scott out
