I have a gutted R442 and have hopes of using to house a modern AM/FM/MP3 player broadcasting Vietnam radio traffic, maybe 15 or 20 minutes worth. Want also to have the ability to tune it to FM stereo for personal entertainment purposes. Have hopes of using the speaker plugs on the front of the 442 for a left and right, modified to 8 ohm, speakers. As much as I'd like, I doubt I can use other faceplate knobs to adjust volume and other on/off options. We all watched Cstaup's stereo /rt-524 conversion which turned out very functional with easy access to the original radio's controls. I'm thinking more of a hinged lid to allow direct access to the MP3/FM player but all original from the outside. With the inerds removed an R442 isn't near as heavy as a working receiver. I may be able to hinge the lid and make it easy to get into. Anyone else have an updated radio shell they're using for more modern electronics?

You could have the top removable use some Zeus fasteners for quick access. I don't see why you couldn't at least use any on/off switch for power. If you have a remote control, it might even go through the shell so'ens ya'll can get the tunes.
