Early M151 half shaft U Joints NEED HELP

Unread post by artillerydan » March 16th, 2011, 12:48 pm

Hello all,

Anyone have the cross refereence or know who has the early half shaft ujoints for the M151? The early halfshafts at the spindal use a U joint like the drive shaft but larger. In other words they are bolted to the spindal with straight bolts not a U bolt like later vehicles and the one on the other end at the pumpkin. HELP!!

OK, sorry it took so long, I had to dig out the parts off my 63, it would appear that the bolt on caps were only used on the rear propeller shafts at the wheel, :?

Here is my 63 rear A arm and hub, "1" rubber bumper

This is the front 63 wheel, it has the U bolt type hookup.

It looks to me that the bolt on cap from the drive shaft U joint will work on the propeller shaft U joint, I removed a cap from my 63 shaft, a front drive shaft, and a NOS propeller shaft half, differential end. Each of the 3 caps fit all 3 of the U joint cross shafts, I then checked all of them with a dial indicator caliper, they were all 0.596 dia. and 0.430 tall. So, if you have new front or rear drive shaft U joints, you could use the caps from 2 of them. :)

Sure it's a 63? If so, maybe someone changed out the rear flanges for later type at some point or the assembly changed in the 1963 time period... don't know, maybe Guru knows when the switch took place.

I am pretty sure those flanges were only used for the first year or two and then switched to the standard u-joint.
