Spammers are getting sneaky
The spammers are getting sneaky now. They reply to a post and in their signature is a link. I would strongly suggest not clicking it!
I have seen mentioned by others that run forums that you can set it up where a mod has to approve the first post of a new member, maybe we should be doing this?

Re: Spammers are getting sneaky
I agree Rick. I'm hoping these fake members can be purged from the system as well as some type of confirmation before a new member may post. I've joined a couple of forums this week and both required approval before I could even log in. We have gone up to 4 - 7 birthday's every single day for nicknames I don't recognize owned by people who never post. There have been some similarities at times of these fake new members. A few months ago the letters "GRY" were in the nicknames or were in the web address they listed as "their page". I have even followed one of their locations to a European country I've never heard of but it exists. If this isn't cleared up next Oct. 28th the bottom of the page will say "Happy Birthday Snock, Rainman, ButterNuts, and lord knows 10 or 20 other names. Entertaining? well maybe but defiantly out of control. Is it possible a real new member may get the boot during the purge? Of course, but necessary to clean up the riffraff that has already slipped in while the guard shack was empty. I say send an email with request for confirmation to every member and boot the ones that bounce back or go unanswered.

Re: Spammers are getting sneaky
Moose can go in and purge the database of old members or people who never have posted, etc.
On my forum we have a first post approval rule and a mod or admin can approve it. Easy to set up. Only the mods or admins see the spammers posts.
I've had a recent flurry of spammers. On my board they have to answer a simple question before they can finish the registration process. So these are real people.
One thing to do is report spammers so the admins can delete them and thier posts with one click in the admin control panel.

I just deleted 2 from the stolen jeep thread. I can only delete posts, Jim is the one who removes names from the memberlist and modifies membership requirements.

Re: Spammers are getting sneaky
these spammers are real people at this point. the measures we have in place eliminate probably 90% of them, leaving only the very determined people. I honestly don't see how the approval of the first post, if it were possible with this software would change that. they would just do it on the second or third post etc. I also go through the user list periodically and delete people who registered and never posted, usually 4-500 at a clip. thats why we don't have 20,000 members yet lol. We could change the board to where all posts have to be approved, but I know I don't have the time to do it, and I doubt my moderators do either. it would probably kill interest in the board as well.

Re: Spammers are getting sneaky
Moose, I use the same software for my forum on an unrelated issue. I mentioned to you a long time ago that besides the Captiva security the next thing is to require all new registrations to be approved and they have to answer a question, something simple like 'What is your favorite military vehicle'. This then is sent to you or the moderators, any of whom can approve the new member. No approval, no posting. Spammers if they get that far will not put in a logical reply to the question.
Simple and it works.

Happy Birthday to Dearietef, CoormasWash, embongebype, actituade. Please allow me to introduce them to you...
Dearietef is 49 today. He joined the 838 in January, lives in the UK, and has never posted it would seem.
CoormasWash is 48 today. He joined us 2 weeks before Christmas, lives in Germany and has made no posts. His website is a foreign commercial site that sells software and printing supplies.
embongebype is now 32, joined in early Dec 2010 and lives here in the US. His hobbies are "womans" and his website has the words "gratis porno film" in the address. I wonder what he's selling?
Last but not least we have actituade who just turned 32. He lives in the US and his hobby is radio. actituade's website has the word "porno" in it and looks to be pushing Russian or Ukrainian sex films.
Best wishes you guys.
While I'm at it we have a new member, wrinuinue. Wrinuinue sells insurance in Kyrgyzstan and enjoys camping. How's job security in Kyrgyzstan I wonder? English is not wrinuinue's first language and he has a whopping 6 vowels in his name. His website looks to be some type of foreign message forum.
One similarity persists. The "common thread" so to speak is that none of them, not a single flippin one of them has logged in since the date joined. Are any of them real people? Perhaps but I seriously doubt it.

Those are probably all bots that then didn't get past the captcha block and so couldn't post any spam since they couldn't activate their accounts. The ones that do post spam are real people who go to the lengths required manually to get access.Rainman wrote:Happy Birthday to Dearietef, CoormasWash, embongebype, actituade. Re: Spammers are getting sneaky
Hey Moose,
I have tried to make light of the situation, other members may continue to seize you at the base of your snardleys on the subject. So your saying that the security measures "in place" don't keep them from joining, just posting? That security is just a mite tardy don't you agree? Last year when joining a weapons forum, I rec'd a return email informing me I had not been approved to join the forum. I needed a personal inside "tug" from Tony Banks before they sent me a temp password to log into their group. I've heard there is a guy over at the 503 that can't join here because he has not rec'd his confirmation email.
That being the case, is it "politically correct" not to bounce the obvious bots? There's another porn pusher in todays birthday boys as well. So that's it, they don't have to post to sell their wares it would seem. No wonder there are so many fake members on the rolls here, the G838.org is an easy target. And I thought pulling parking guard with a broken cue stick was futile, or walking around with a fully automatic M16 and no ammunition to keep someone from stealing it from me. I'm not going to bring up BOARDER CONTROL again, not even in humor.

So what are you telling me, I should close off access and make the site "invitation only"? As long as they can't post spam does it matter? The guy at 503 who was not receiving his conf email was because he used a different address when he logged on, that has been fixed for him.
