151 A2 brakes

Unread post by smlemk111 » July 5th, 2010, 6:54 pm

Hi Yesterday I was in a parade of about 3 miles. It was just at walking speed abot 2 miles out I saw smoke and the brakes were freezing up I let it cool about an hour and they were loose again any ideas as to cause? they got quite hot as I had to finnish the parade as there was noware to pull off. I drove it home the 3 miles today with no problem. I wonder about the master cylinder and think I should inspect all the brakes before driving it further. Al

Sounds like the brakes are adjusted too tight. They should be 11 clicks back from snug.

Define snug...simple resistance or drum doesnt move

Look in your master cyl. and see if there is a crystal looking material inside...some people try to put dot 3 fluid in a dot 5 system and they will not mix....together they turn to crud and after a bit the return valve in the master cyl. will not release...hence your brakes will stay on and not retract and get hot and lock up...when you have this problem of hot brakes put the jeep in netural and try to push it, if you can't move it take a 3/4 deep well socket and back off the line bolt on the bottom of the master cyl.(located under dash) pressure will release and you should be able to push jeep with ease...if so rebuild or replace master cyl...If the brakes getting hot were on the rear only it is a rear rubber line gone bad...Take a tea spoon or salt spoon and stick it in the master cyl. fill hole and scrape inside if you bring crud its the master cyl....that is my bet....
slowest mutt east of the missippi..

hello

have you done a repair on the pedal box or the brake pedal ?
if the rod tad go inside the master cylinder is to tight it can not go far enough back
it must have a play
you can check it if the all the brake`s are warm or hot loose a breeder valve 1/2 sec
if it spray`s brake fluid and the brake`s are loose the little equalization hole in the master cylinder is not coming free
(every time you brake there is a tiny brake fluid left and builds up the pressure so the brake`s are going to drag )

otherwise clean the master cylinder

Snug would be a fair amount of resistance but still able to turn the drum by hand. You do not need to get it to the point of needing two hands to turn it. Then you back off 11 clicks on each one.
