OK, 2 of the mutts at the shop have this type of joint on the "rear" only, when I got home I looked at Betty Mutt and they are also on the rear. I will note that they are only on the U-joint at the wheel.

What you describe is very interesting. That is exactly where I have had u joint failures time and again on my A2. Maybe that style of mount was originally chosen because the thought it was more substantial than those that were secured with just u bolts. Of course they went to ubolted ujoint all around on later units, therefore the snapping problem occurs.
