p-38
hey, do any of you guys remember what a p-38 was? We called them john waynes for why, it beats the heck out of me on my mutt went to change out the left front half axle u joint, well the u bolt was rusted in the flange thing connected to the wheel, well I got one leg freed up, but not the other so I cut the u bolt in half, twisted the free one out of the hole. then I cut the other one flush with the flange thing, now can't hardly see the outline, (thought I could use a punch to knock out the piece from the flange but no) so I guess I take the wheel apart to figure out how to get the flange by itself to drill out the broken u bolt, what a nightmare, the needles in the u joints were bone dry, rusty. well I hope I can fix it if not, I'll have 3 wheel drive.

Re: p-38
The P-38 I carried in Vietnam hangs on a dog-tag chain from the rear mirror of my M151. At a car show the other day (near Fort Benning, Georgia), three different guys were still carrying a P-38 on their key chains.

Re: p-38
I carried one around on my key chain for years but got tired of getting stabbed by it. I've still got a couple around here somewhere.

Re: p-38
I got mine still on a raw hide string on the sheath of my Randall model#18
never noticed there was a bigger, P-51 version.
At a reunion of my unit two years ago we gave out a p-38 {bought surplus on eBay} to everyone during the final dinner banquet, over 120 people and most wanted two!

Re: p-38
Oh ya, glad the p38 brought back the memories, I thought I'd mention that punch in p-38 on google or where ever I did, well it brought up all kinds
of info, I don't know if it was issued with the later field rations, I just saw it with c rats, actually it was a very useful device for other than opening cans, aw, you all know that, ya I forgot that there was a pistol, an airplane. And I didn't know there was a bigger version.
I got my flange with the broken u bolt removed ,(took the nut off the shaft that holds the wheel bearing on, and pulled it out from back of the
wheel, pretty simple to my joy, aw, you all know I am not a good mechanic and I hate learning stuff the hard way, but lot of stuff with these military vehicles seem ingenuity with the allowing for the people who mess with them that it ends up being a simple fix, if you know what I mean.
Well gotta go, I've had a couple of beers so I hope my sentence / thought idea was got across ok , you guys help me out alot and I wish the best for you all.
