same problem but worse

Unread post by Fred » March 28th, 2010, 11:09 am

I have to crank my A2 for 5 min. before it starts. It seems the fuel drains back into the tank after it is shut off. I've replaced the fuel line which had pin holes with rubber hose. Replaced the fuel pump with the Chrysler slant six pump. Rebuilt carb. Took carb apart again and freed up the float bowl which was hanging up and set its specs, but if it sits for a few hours it takes 5 mins to starts and when runs carb seems to have excess fuel by air intake and it will not idle. I'm about to put a steel jaceted bullet in my magum and put it out of its misery. Mr. Recovery was going to stop by awhile back but I guess He's busy and I'm an hours drive away.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Fred

Fred, I have been in your shoes, you might want to look back in previous blogs there are countless ones on fuelines , carb settings and tanks. I'm not trying to not answer you but I went thru this exact problem last april and and there are alot people that will help.

but look thru some old ones and don't shoot your MUTT it's not personal- but if your losing the fuel back to the tank you have a leak somewhere I made a steel fuel line bought a bender and and a couple tubes and fiqured it out- I ran it from the Tank pick up to the inlet side of the pump then replaces all the factory Rubber from the outlet side of the pump to the carb problem solved.

does it take 5 min to start even with full choke?

Fred, where are you in florida? 1 hour north, south or east of mr recovery?
If east, ie in the center near Lake wales or Avon Park, I know a mechanic who knows M151s and can get you set up

Are you running an additional plastic see through filter inline? This will show you if the fuel is draining back out of the lines. You could have other issues and not realize it.

Hi,
I live in Lake Placid just south of Avon Park and for awhile I did have a see thru filter mounted by the input side of the pump and yes it did drain back. I don't see how a rubber hose could cause the fuel to drain back. Once started it will run just not idle. I have to leave the acelerater cable pulled out alittle.

Idle should be 550 rpm. I would install a clear filter between the output of the fuel pump and carb. This will show you if your getting a solid flow to the carb.

i have faced this before and found that the failure to idle part of the problem, separate from the drainback issue, was that the mounting gasket between the carburetor base and the intake manifold was sucking air. replace the gasket and make sure the seal is tight. that may help with the idle.

hello

do you use the steel inline filter on the carb
if yes take it off this give a lot of problems (clocked )

next try it with a hose in a can at the pump inlet
so you can work your way up to the engine

after the pump there is pressure in the line
if there is problem it leaks

the two valve`s in the pump prevent tad the fuel can go back to the tank
they are open from the tank to the engine and closed back

on carb series 10939511 is a filter inside the inlet plug
