Ethanol resistant gas cap seal

Unread post by csmith » October 26th, 2009, 7:09 am

FYI, I just went over to G5 at Rickf's suggestion and bought some gaskets from Jim Hybicki. He has Main Gas Tank, and 5 gal Jerry Can rubber ethanol resistant caskets available at Very reasonable prices. Jim can be reached at JAMESHYBICKI@aol.com
if anyone is interested. Price $3.90 for the first, $3.00 for additional including shipping, same price for both caskets.

Just for my knowledge .....

(1) why are they termed different :?:
(2) Do the normal gaskets not hold ethanol back / Is ethanol capable of bypassing normal cap seals :?: or is it a marketing gimmick  :?:
(3) Are these gaskets, rubber or leather :?:
(4) Would leather perform the same function in sealing the cap as rubber does :?:

Sam

Ethanol will make some types of rubber soft as well as swell out of shape. The gas cap gasket is usually where problems show up. I don't think all gas cap gaskets were made out of a type of rubber that reacts adversely with ethanol or more people would report problems. I don't think leather would work very long with the more modern cleaner burning types of gasoline that are made today.
