Cleaning my gas tank

Unread post by snuffy » October 20th, 2009, 10:54 pm

You guys aren't going to believe this. My gas tank was rusted BAD inside. I was going to buy another one. Thanks to Steve at Owensexport and Todd for coming forth with good used gas tanks, But a friend suggested I let him experiment with cleaning it.

He jacked up one of the rear tires on his backhoe with his outrigger. After removing everything we could remove, He strapped my tank to the tire, threw in gravel, sand, pebbles, water, and soap. He put the tractor in low gear and let the tire spin the gas tank very slowly for about 3 hours. It came out clean as a baby's butt. No varnish, no rust, no old gas, nothing but bright metal!!

I don't know about the safey issues, or all the possible things that could have happened. I just know my gas tank is ready to be sealed.

I'm a happy camper.

Did the same thing with old bolts, nuts and other small parts I was lazy to clean. Threw them up into my concrete mixer together with sand and after about 2 hours they were bright and shiny! :) It was quite noisy though

The idea of sealing it after all that tumbling makes a lot of sense. I could see rust forming where the scratches went through the lining in the tank.

Just a thought.
