M151A1 in tank filter
Guys,
The Mutt has developed a hesitation at high RPM's in each gear. From what I've read on this forum it's likely the in tank filter which makes sense since that's the only item I haven't had apart. I bought a new filter, top assembly to tank gasket, and even found a new pump for $200.00, just in case. Before I disassemble this tomorrow I wanted to ask the experts if there are any surprises I should expect? Thank you in advance boys.

No real surprises in the way of things got BOING. But you might have a fight on your hands getting that old gasket loose on the cover. Take a real good look at the inside of the tank once it is off, especially the inside of the top of the tank with a mirror. I am sure you will find rust but you will have to make the determination if you want to coat the tank now or later. I recommend that EVERYONE coat their tanks due to the age of the tanks and the makeup of todays fuel. That was a hell of a deal on the pump!!! I am selling a used one for more than that.

On reassembly, make sure your insulators are in good shape where the terminal exits the hat, don't want any surprises.
Re: M151A1 in tank filter
Thanks guys. I searched hard in my aircraft parts locater service under the NSN, pump and kit part numbers to find it. Also picked up a new Zenith carb (from 1988) still in cosmoline ($95.00) from a guy at Findlay who bought it from a widow at a yard sale. Lucky on those two cause I'm way deep in the love as Mark told me I should do when I joined this forum.

Depending on how deep you want to go into the fuel system this series of posts from last August might provide some useful information:

hi
at my opinion check first is the problem sits there
look at the carb how much fuel come from the tank
take the hose off and start the engine
it will run at the fuel at the carb bowl
good luck

New carbs do not come in cosmoline!! They come in a box with the box being wrapped in a foil bag. They had stopped using cosmoline in the 60's - 70's for anything.Sundawg3 wrote: ↑July 17th, 2024, 9:00 pmThanks guys. Re: M151A1 in tank filter
Well this one is new and was in cosmoline. How it happened I don't care.
I'm glad I researched this forum and found the post by Rickf stating the in tank filter being plugged will cause bad acceleration. I changed the filter, which didn't show visible debris, and the Mutt accelerates better than ever. The Mutt could outrun a 74 Vega!!! Thanks again guys...

Yes, but it didn't hold up very long. That was 1977/78 when I lived in Colorado. The donner parts came from a rollover out of the DRMO yard at Ft. Carson.
