Two engines for $100?

Unread post by Refit1701 » April 10th, 2009, 5:57 am

A local person has four 4cyl engines listed for $100 total, including two Mutt engines. Sight unseen, would this be a good deal if they were a least rebuildable? He has a photo up and at least one has all the accessories with it.

My buddy says Mutt engines are common so this isn't a good deal.

What say the experts??

M151 engines may be common, but they are seldom local, at least for most of us. If even one of them still has most of the parts, I would get them immediately :!:

I bought 7 early engines once upon a time for $50, and am still removing starters and generators for current use. Heck, I gave HK more than $200 worth of parts off of them. :)
Jump while they're available, or you'll kick yourself repeatedly every time you need to buy a small part off ebay and pay $13 for S/H. There is a certain comfort to know you have spare engine parts just waiting for you to give them "a new mission".

Storage is always a problem with things like this. My buddy is likely worried that those engines will wind up in his shop, like the two M37 engines I bought did!

I'd have to put these in the storage unit, if I get them.

The generator is worth more than that alone!

Be advised, these are waterproof engines that can withstand outdoor storage if complete. Don't know that I'd pay $100 a month for a unit to keep them in, but the backyard with a decent tarp could sustain them for years. Do you have future plans to own, restore, or part out your aquired treasures? You might be able to get parts to a few here and still make a few bucks. If $ is not your motivation, personal need will dictate where you go from here. If you don't pick them up, offer them to another member to keep them from the scrap yard. Used starters and generators and carbs could do more than double your money. Your call my friend, but Id rather keep them from the scrappers if I could.

Oh, I don't want them to go to waste. I haven't gotten the guy on the phone yet. One of the four engines appears (from the photos) to be flathead jeep engine. So I'm gonna chase him down.....

Update:

I talked to the guy. He got them in a trade, one of them is complete, even the carb. I'm not sure how complete the other one is. I'm getting them both for $100. Picts tommorrow night, if I can get home with them. 8)

Seems a good deal to me. I might bring one to Aberdeen, depending on the condition.
