Paint questions....
Hi,
thinking my mutt needs a makeover. I was wondering how many gallons of paint(roughly) would it take to do a motorpool type paint job? I was thinking of using RAPCO paint.....also is the paint right out of the gallon can sprayable? Or do I have to thin it and use a hardener or????
Thanks!
Chad

Re: Paint questions....
It must be reduced and IIRC the ration is 4:1. I also added hardener the last time I used it although you do not need to. I reduced it with Zylene that I got from my local hardware store. I was doing green carc which should be flat and either the Zylene or the hardener mad it a bit glossy. I hope this helps.
Re: Paint questions....
Thanks! All info helps! I have never painted before, but I'm on a roll......

Re: Paint questions....
I was told two gallons will paint the whole body when I bought my paint, have yet to use it and its been some years. This summer we shall see. I restored an old M20 super bazooka several years ago and bought a gallon of the korean war era olive from gillispie, I used half of a gallon and thinned it with Xylene, I know I used way too much but thats how much it took, It was my first time spraying anything with an HVLP gun. I sprayed it in a heated downdraft paint booth. The next day the painter came in and flipped his top, he couldn't believe I used that much paint, he had to replace all the filters in the paint booth (my father owned the body shop).
I'd say two gallons min, three, maybe four and a case of rattle cans for odds and ends, this assumption is based off that half gallon (thinned) for one little 6 foot long tube. I'd like to note though after all these years the paint has held up great on that bazooka as it still looks new.

Re: Paint questions....
Hey Chad,
The painter who painted my Mutt asked to bring two gallons of paint and ended up using only one and a half, that was for only painting the upper exterior, So if your going for a through paint of the whole tub, you'd be needing at least three.

LOL! Looks good! I painted my 416 trailer with a case of 12 rattle cans.....almost made it....a few thin spots here and there....I was going to hit those spots when I sprayed the mutt.....on another note, I used only 7 cans doing the black/383 green camo on my Ferret.... its weird sometimes....I just don't get it.....thanks for the info! Looks like I'll do the 4 gallons and a 12er of rattle cans......

When I painted my M151A1, I think I used roughly 5 gallons of Gillispie 24087. Now I did do a complete tear down resto on it so everything got painted. I also used about half dozen rattle cans for touch ups and what not. As for thining it, I used mineral spirits (was recommended).
What color (or colors) are you going to paint your A2? I was thinking about doing mine (when the time comes) in that 4 color MERDC pattern.
Regards,
WC

I did that 'cause I can't leave anything well enough alone . The shade you want for US Army Vietnam era is OD semi gloss 24087.
My A2 is currently painted a shade of 24087 the previous owner brought the paint at Lowes . Color is pretty close even if it isn't the correct (automotive) type paint.
Your Ferret MK 1/2 is painted in black & green camo? Mine is currently tan & black. When I get to the point of painting it, I was thinking of solid tan. Maybe I should do it in the same black & green pattern that your's is in. This way with each of us having a Ferret MK 1/2 & an OD M151A2, we can be brothers! !

Re: Paint questions....
yeah...thats it....24087. The Mutt is CARC now I think....old, tired, and Im pretty bored with it.
Yup, The Ferret was Bronze green, looked nice when I got it, but I really liked how the black/green NATO whatever camo looked. I will figure out how to post pix.....mutt and Ferret. Theres another guy on G503 that has a Ferret and an A1.....there are more of us! LOL!!!

I almost forgot. I just got done painting the interior of my M1009 Cucv (Chevy full size blazer) and it took 3/4 of a gallon of real Shermin Williams green CARC.

Is that guy Buggy Man? If it is, than he used to own an A1 but now has an A2 (hence the "brothers" reference). Ask me how I know ! Actually, I think there may be more than one mutt/Ferret combo owner over there.
