I would not technically call this a gun jeep. Gun jeeps would have a M38A1C designation with a split windshield.

Sorry I am very tired tonight and do not mean to insult your jeep. My first military vehicle was a M38A1C that was thrown away due to it's windshield. It was tough to keep dry when it rained due to the windshield.

i think the vehicle you mention was equipped with a 106 recoilless rifle, if my memory is correct. this vehicle has a mounted M60, just as the gun jeeps used when i was an MP in viet nam, many years ago. we used them to run convoys and do road patrols. this picture is me at fsb mace in 1970.

Well, I am no expert on M38's but wouldn't an M38A1 also not have locking hubs? And wouldn't the gun be a 1919? In today's times it is all about the thought that counts. Ron is probably laughing because he knows exactly how I feel when the purists start on how a 151 or any other military vehicle is "supposed" to be this way or that. In the military there were many, many field expedients, These were not show vehicles to them, they were tools of war. Get the job done no matter what it takes and deal with the consequences later. Consequences of coarse being some high ranking idiot officer telling you you broke the regulations for modifying the vehicle without orders.

Nowadays the wars these vehicles were in are 70 and 50 years removed respectively. Most people do not even remember the Korean war, much less the Vietnam war so accuracy of the vehicles to that degree in a parade is moot point. I go to the shows and I see the judging for the WWII Jeeps and I a amazed at the detail required to get a passing grade. It is Concours crap!!!! All of the flats on the nuts for the battery terminals have to be pointing exactly the same way!!!!! I judged the M-151's for several years at Aberdeen and those of us that judged them swore they would never get to that point. I no longer do it since all the shows have moved to far away for me to attend so I don't know if they have gotten to that point with the 151's yet but I will bet they are getting there. People go to great pains, and expense, to make these vehicles look ten times better than they ever did when they came off the assembly line.

I am sure I am going to hear about this but I am me and I am well known for telling it like I see it.

i think this picture is the model to which you made reference. i could be wrong, though, it's been a lot of years since then.

rick, you are sure right about that. my MP unit didn't have any of those early models, we had M151s and V100s. all of them carried M60s. as for field expedient efforts, we wanted an M60 on the back of our Vs, so we had the shop guys fabricate mounts we could use, and put M60s on them. they could swing quite a wide arc. one day i will tell you the looong story of an ARVN duece and a half that tried to break our convoy when i was "tail end charlie".

It's a jeep and has a gun. Looks like a gun jeep to me!
Here's my old M38A1. Purchased it from a Korean War vet. Had to sell when I moved overseas.
