I had the individual brakes on my buggies and also on those that I raced in Baja but they were used for steering more than anything else. I always ran aggressive tires in the back so getting stuck was not an issue and in the desert dunes we ran paddles. As far as making an open diff act like a posi a lot of the time if you ride the brake a little you can get the free spinning tire to drag enough that the other tire will pick up the slack enough to get you moving. And I have never seen those spider gear thrust washers wear out unless it was out of oil or full of water. I spiders usually go long before the washers.
