Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
Need to restore the tail light buckets on my MUTT. I know I can get the entire assembly, but it's just the sockets for the bulbs that are toast. Anyone know of a source for just the brass bulb sockets wired for Packard or Douglas connectors?
Re: Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
You know, it's comments like this that make me want to go down and buy up all the used composite lights this fella has...5 bucks each. He's a contractor at a military base and he was given two big large rubbermaid totes filled with fronts and rears, all of which have some kind of small problem. Some are surely only donors...others just need a little attention to detail...some even have modern LED kits in them.
*sigh*
Not gonna do it. Nope.

HOWEVER...if no one offers you the guts from some salvage taillight I COULD be persuaded to pick one up for you and mail it. I may be going by there tomorrow or Sunday..
Re: Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
the LED kits for the black-out part for the light or everything?

What I am SURE of (it has been some time) is that I saw the LED bulbs for the blackouts. They're a small squarish panel of LEDs where the bulb would be. I didn't look closely but it appeared they had a regular bulb-type base on them.
Re: Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
that's what I was thinking. As I don't drive so much with the black-out lights, it is probably a not so much needed upgrade...

Re: Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
As I'm looking and feeling closer to my buckets, I can only presume the military installed the socket with two wires threaded out small hole in the rear and then installed the connectors. No hole in the bucket large enough for either the socket or the connectors to pass through. So if I got two donor buckets, I'd have to cut off the wires, remove, install and then splice the wires again. So, I'm doubtful that a connector with a socket attached is available. I probably need to source with sockets with two correct gauge wires attached and then install my own connectors.
Unless someone else has a better idea.
I picked up a slection of complete tail lights for $15 ea and this is what we are running into. Water still trapped inside. The doors and lenses are good and the buckets are salvageable, but the sockets are toast.

M & J,
You can disassemble all parts of the front and rear composite lights. Take the lens off, slide out the horizontal mounting plates for the sockets, then push out the round rubber plug in the back of the housing with the wires going through it. You then remove the packard connectors and slide the wires out of the round rubber plug, one at a time, if you need to. The socket will accept either the regular bulb or the newer LED bulb which has the same socket mount as the regular bulb.
Hope that helps. TJ’s offer of $5 buckets is unheard of and would be hard to pass up.

One other point for M & J,
Keep track of which wires are connected to the upper and lower bulb sockets. There are separate grounds for different sockets that are grounded to and through the mounting bolts for the lights..

Offer still stands if you want to go the $5 route.

Here are some photos I was sent a few years ago. These were direct repair kits for the M151 and A1 tail-light units and were available from several MV dealers and also IIRC - NAPA. You'll need to check with the dealers.
This is what they looked like:-
There may be repair kits for the composites but I've no details on those.

Little off topic here,
In the middle of stripping the mutt down for repainting and refurbishing everything that was stripped off. Around 2005 replaced the plastic front and rear composite lights with a used set from eBay. These are made of metal and believe they were from a Humvee. The stampings on the lights and frames say they were made by swiss controls.
Anyway, the lenses have deep scratches that cannot be polished out and have been looking for just the lenses and have had no luck finding just the lenses. Shown is one of the lenses and the frame that retains the lens.
Anyone know were to get these?
Sorry for the off topic post.

Re: Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
$30 plus shipping. Ouch! The $5 tail lights are interesting, but I'm picturing only two in a large flat rate box at $20, so to get a bunch and hope to get a couple of sets that are restorable or even outright good to go, the shipping is the issue. Otherwise, I'd take two toes worth and just clean them up, test them and pay them forward.

Re: Tail light replacement bulb sockets needed
This is on wrong end of the post but..I thought the black out lights were used in place of the regular head lites so the enemy wouldn't see your vehicle by way of your headlights, so well my experience is I couldn't see where I was driving by way of the black out lites.
