No Electrical Working
Well, my cousin called yesterday and related that they body work is completed, and my guess is that they're getting ready to bring it back to my place.
Apparently, after re-installing the batteries, (which were charged to 100% prior to re-installation) there is no indication of power through the truck, When the master switch is on, no gauge movement, no horn, no response from starter. I sent a graphic showing the required battery cable hookup, with a follow-on call saying that there was still no power.
Truck remained on it's wheels during the bodywork, and only the batteries were removed.
The -20 troubleshooting for similar condition (no power) is only to check for proper battery connections. I sent a follow-on image of battery diagram just now, and hope it is only a matter of two batteries being used when most folks only experience one at a time.

Re: No Electrical Working
I don't see your photo, but here is one of my connections in the battery box. Negative battery cable must go to good ground. If you run a multi meter from positive battery ternimanl and to anywhere on the frame, you should be completing the circuit.. Now you know what I know.

Re: No Electrical Working
If they did a total body paint make sure that the ground connection from the battery to the body is to bare clean metal.

Thanks Mutt Jeff and Rick. I'll pass it along. Shouldn't be any paint, only primer, but same rule applies, I know.

Re: No Electrical Working
A little embarrassing to admit, but worked on a fellow club members M37 24v yesterday and could not get the electrical working. Bubba had painted the negative battery cable terminals red and we hooked them up to the positive and chased our tail for a while until we figured out that we had the truck now connected as a positive ground. Once we made the correct battery connections and repainted the cable end black and red with red being positive, we had headlights.
Doesn't hurt to check the basics...

Re: No Electrical Working
OK, issue resolved.
The main power able to the dash was traced and I'm told that the slave receptacle up under the heater box was at fault. That was corrected, and a new, stout, ground cable replaced the original engine block to body cable. Instant power was the result.
The primered truck comes back to me early next week.

Re: No Electrical Working
It sounds like the main power wire is going to that slave receptacle and it should be going to the starter switch. Not really a big deal as long as you remember that it will not be where the diagram shows it should be.

Re: No Electrical Working
Yes Rick, not going to be an issue when I ensure the main cable goes direct to starter. I will never be using that slave cable receptacle anyways. My cousin did make the observation that only a sick, twisted mind could have designed the heater installation on the M151. I can't argue.....

Re: No Electrical Working
I think in the 60's the heater was not installed alot as the bulk of the mutts were going to Vietnam IMHO

Re: No Electrical Working
I would not do anything with the slave plug because they do come in handy if you or another needs a jump. The starter should not be connected in any way to that slave plug. The slave plug is connected to the batteries totally separately from everything else and should not have anything else connected to it. It sounds like someone moved the #5 power wire from the starter switch on the floor over to the slave cable from what he is saying. I have no idea why someone would do that but if there is a smaller wire on the slave then that is what was done.

Re: No Electrical Working
I am pretty sure the heater was never installed at the factory. It was installed at the depot depending on the final destination of the vehicle.

Re: No Electrical Working
Well that is a hell of a way to put it! What I have been told is what comes off the assembly line is the base vehicle and after that it goes to the Ordnance department and they decide who gets it and what equipment and kits are installed on the vehicle. That is also where the vehicle gets it Data plate and official identification number.

Re: No Electrical Working
Jumping into this thread late, and I can't speak for M151 production, but as a WWII jeep guy, they were made pretty standard from the factory. Every jeep had a machine gun reinforcement plate welded to the frame and crossmember, but no jeep left the factory with a machine gun mount, or radios, or any other specialized equiptment. Once the were received by the unit, the commanding officer would dictate how many were radio jeeps, how many were gun jeeps, etc. and the motor pool or ord company made the field mods and installed the factory supplied parts.
A true Mariine corp jeep would have been a separate contract and any Marine Corps specifications like beefed up suspension for radios, lift rings, etc., and they were done at the factory. Same with Canadian or British contracts.
So I would agree that heaters, radio connections, slave sockets, snorkel kits, etc., were all done in the field. The WWII jeeps even left the factory with no pioneer tools like shovels and axes and they were supplied in the field.
