M151 Completed Project

Unread post by Scomo2324 » May 12th, 2020, 7:20 pm

My uncut 151 (not an A1, nor an A2, just the straight 151) was a hunting jeep that my Dad bought and rebuilt back in the early '90s. I'm not sure how this MUTT avoided the demilitarization cuts and scrap heap. That's a story that has been lost to the ages.

My Father served in the Army and later with the Texas National Guard, but this jeep was never about military history or preservation. It was just a hunting jeep to him. As you can see in some of the pictures below, he added some "enhancements" for our hunting needs and painted it an awful shade of blue.

Dad passed in '97 and the jeep sat in his barn for the next 20 years. After Mom passed, I brought it to Austin in 2017. My plan was to sell it once I got it running. As I started my work, I researched the data plates and learned about it's military origins. The more I read, the more I realized that I had something unique. Although I did not have the privilege of serving, I decided it was my responsibility to preserve the military history. So I decided to find someone who knew more about MUTTs.

With some help from this forum, I found Dan Dickson & MUTT Rescue in Central Texas. I reached out and he was kind enough to take a look. He suggested that beginning with a "less molested" core would be "fiscally responsible", however I wanted to work with what Dad left me. Through Dan's guidance, patience and persistence we now have the example you see below.

When choosing the final look, we decided to honor my Father-in-Law, who is still with us. He served in the 3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment in Germany. He has no idea we're doing this. I can't wait to get him to Austin for the big reveal!

Thank you to all of the members of this group who have shared their projects, stories and advice. And a big thank you to Dan and the guys at MUTT Rescue. I would still have an ugly baby blue hunting jeep if it weren't for them.

Keep 'em rolling!

Eskimo2324,

Very nice restoration. Good to see another one rescued. Keep us updated with more pictures. I’ve heard about Mutt Rescue (if its the one in Wimberly) and wondered how they are doing.

Great job! From my readings and understanding, the straights were sold as surplus without demil for a time before it was decided that they were all too "dangerous" for the public to own and the gov decided to half, quarter, etc. Muttguru would pr9bably know when the switch happened.

Very nice! I don't know why he would say to start with a less molested core, if those pics on the trailer and the one in the garage with the rear extension were what you started with that was an EXCELLENT core!! Much better than what most of us have start with. Looks like it had no rust on it.

Looking good Scomo, definitely an above average starting point, not the normal rust bucket, great job. :D

Ken,
Add to Jeff's reference a couple of things. During the 1/4 cut era, there was a point where the suspension components had to be cut (with a torch displacing 1/2" of metal or more) or left with the govt. Thus the preferred crushing method. The irony to this was that new suspension components were being sold at the same facilities on the monthly local auctions with no demil requirement. Also, towards the end of the M151 demil era, an addendum was added that stated that you were only purchasing the mechanical and ancillary components; the unitized body and/or body components were not included in the sales contract. The demilled body remained the property of the US Govt. The intent of this had to do with "creative" ways of removing intact bodies or complete vehicles without complying with the contractual demil terms. Assuming you had a large group of M151s to demil, and assuming you found some creative way of getting a few of the best vehicles off of govt property intact, your only "crime" was Non Compliance with the Contract's Terms. After the addendum, you could be charged with a real crime, Theft of Government Property.

Now we KNOW none of our favorite people would have EVER used any of those "creative" ways to remove complete bodies now would they?

I have no knowledge of any such creativity. If I did have knowledge of aforementioned creativity, I would not be at liberty to discuss such knowledge. Or, to quote America's most despised bitch "I don't recall"
