What vehicle is this?

I showed the pics of the one in the museum and the one in service to my father in law and he instantly recognized the vehicles. He verified what was said about Patton sending advance recons forward and that is what they used. He also related how cold it was, "DAMN COLD", and the clothing was not up to it.
