This trailer was in pretty much as you see when I purchased. ID tag appeared recent. Paperwork states 1967 Johnson Furnace
Does serial number match up. Just wondering.

Oh boy, it makes me smile to see the Johnson Furnace name again. They were located in my home town - Bellevue, Ohio. I rode my bicycle past that place about a million times during the years these were being produced and I have a very vague recollection of seeing those trailers loaded on flat cars but I may be wrong about that. Time plays funny tricks on the old memories. Johnson Furnace was situated next to a rather strange confluence of Norfolk & Western railroad track so they had a dedicated siding that they may have shared with General Electric which was located nearby and across the street.

How I would love to have a real, legit Johnson Furnace-produced trailer!

Cheers,
TJ

That is a really nice trailer! How in the world do you get it in that storage unit sideways like that?

Both trailer and Jeep are stored in security storage facility. Mainly because wife refuses to give up “her” garage. That’s Ok. I call it a remote man cave. I was very surprised when I first saw this trailer. No visible rust. The tub is also nice and smooth inside. Has the drains. It is a vintage M416. Is my thoughts this trailer was a parade and display queen for many years. Not parked in “motor pool”. Thanks for the information about the manufacturer location and your personal story. This type of information I print out for my journal I have on both my vehicles. Only have two grand children. Boys. They love Paw’s toys. They enjoy reading my maintenance and repair journals. I also take before and after pictures to accompany written portions.
Any other information as to possible birthday of M416 based on serial number would be gratefully appreciated.

To answer how I got trailer in sideways....the ultimate jackknifing. Haha.

Not to belabor the point but for those who are interested, Johnson Furnace was located to the NW of the intersection of Monroe Street (which generally runs W,NW there) and Cemetery Street (which runs E-W). There, you will find a railroad intersection set up a lot like a large interstate highway interchange. So, if you were traveling NW on Monroe Street, having just passed Cemetery Street, the first RR crossing you would encounter would be the former location of Johnson Furnace.

And if you are curious enough to look up a map of Bellevue, Ohio, found here -

https://www.cityofbellevue.com/Bellevue ... PDATES.pdf

...to find the location simply look for the railroad crossing over Route 20 (Main Street) and follow it south to where the tracks diverge. The south end of that large RR interchange is where Johnson Furnace was located. Unfortunately, Johnson Furnace and any mention of it seems to be long gone now. Time and tide...

Another tidbit follows - -

Bellevue has the odd distinction of being situated in four counties. Sandusky County (to the NW), Eire County (NE), Seneca County (to the SW), and Huron County (SE). So, if you are going to make further inquiries into the history of Johnson Furnace it might be useful to know that it was located in Huron County, Lyme Township.

Parking lot now. But I will bet that outline is the footprint of the original building.

Yup, right behind the recycling place (which has been there FOREVER)..

Follow Monroe up to E. Center you will find Consolo Service station. That used to be the Queen & Lamana Sunoco gas station. Two service bays and four pumps and a early 70's tallboy Ford 4x4 with a big push bumper. I pumped gas there all through my high school years and all the older fellas were WWII servicemen. George Queen served on Eisenhauer's staff. I believe Nick Lamana was infantry and the mechanic was an Army motor pool mechanic. You had to walk the straight and narrow with those fellas!

Cheers,

Hello 1SGC,

If you really want your trailer to be as near-correct as possible, then that "2D 3428" registration needs to be altered.
The "2D" would signify a 1/4-ton truck (such as an M151), not a trailer.
1/4-ton trailers would have a registration beginning with "6"

I looked through my records and I don't have any M416 trailers built by Johnson Furnace in 1967...EXCEPT for one 3/4-ton flatbed trailer (M762) built in 1967 by Johnson Corporation.

It looks like the heyday of Johnson Furnace M416 manufacturing was in 1965-66.
Hope this helps....a bit.
Ken
Kind regards....
Ken

I have some convoy pictures from 1977. My unit was on way to Ft. Bliss, El Paso. Will look at those. Hopefully can get some ID numbers. I will share if able to recover clear copies.
Thanks for the information help. Is my understanding some vehicle ID numbers are anniversary or birthdays.

Hello Ken (Mutt Guru). The pictures are from the my 416 trailer. The stamped dog tag was mounted on the safety chain at mounting. I had never noticed. 6P8062. I found a picture of a 416 with similar number taken in Vietnam (according to author).
If this number were in fact my trailer ID 6P8062....
1. Manufacturer ?
2. Date of Manufacture?
3. Contract number ?

Thanks in advance from any or all comments.

This is picture taken from Pinterest. Seen by many I’m sure. But similar Vehicle ID.

I did locate the convoy pictures from 1977. However, the vehicle ID of only M416 was not focused well enough to read.

Hello again 1SGC....

I have a record of a 6P trailer not too far away from your trailer with the dogtag. Presuming that yours was from that same lot then:-

1. Manufacturer - CEMSCO Wilmington
2. Date of Manufacture - Estimated June/July 1967
3. Contract number - DA20-113-AMC-07448-(T)

I hope this helps.....
Ken

Thanks much Ken. Since the trailer currently has a “Jeep” vehicle ID number. I will start the process of changing to the dog tag number. I searched the frame for a stamped number but to no avail. I drug outside since was beautiful sunny day here today. (Central TEXAS). I will send pictures once all has been corrected. Will take a bit of time, but well worth effort.
This site is a WEALTH of information.
Thanks again

During recent rehab for a knee replacement, I had lots of time to read from this forum. I happened to find pictures and post for a trailer for sale in Austin, TX in 2008. There it was, photo evidence of the vehicle real ID number. One photo has 6P8062 painted on inside left frame. Another has the number written with yellow grease pencil on left front of tub. Somewhere in past 12 years, someone decided to change ID, for what ever reason.

Again this forum is a wealth of information. Thanks again Ken (MuttGuru) for your valuable knowledge.
