Leisure Lakes Steam Rally

Unread post by muttguru » July 24th, 2016, 1:05 pm

Yesterday me and mrs muttguru went to a small steam rally at Southport's Leisure Lakes estate. It was the usual mix of steam engines, classic cars and motorcycles. There was a display of military vehicles but not as many as expected on the first day, especially as the weather forecast for Sunday wasn't good.
Anyway, here are a few piccies I took.

Below:- a WWII Ward LaFrance wrecker with all the original bells and whistles on it...very nice, too.

Next one shows an unusual American MV. (Middle vehicle). It's an airfield capture truck which was airlifted into enemy positions to operate as a mobile command post. The owners have kitted out the interior as a camper van but it still has many fixtures from original, including a built-in power generator, map lights etc. It was one of 6 built in right-hand-drive format especially for UK forces in the Mid-East.

Last photo shows two M151A2s belonging to Keith who lives a mile or so away from the site. These are two of Fernando Martins' ex-Portuguese Marines mutts, restored by Keith. He has another FOUR to restore !

Wheres the steam?! On the second one I am assuming you are talking about the GMC in the center since I clearly see a Land Rover emblem on the one on the left and the UN marked truck is not exactly something I would picture as a forward airlift vehicle. Looking at the front hubs on that GMC and they are rather different then I am used to seeing, they look like planetary hubs.

Thanks for the post Ken. Interesting that the brush guard on the wrecker covers the turn signal on the drivers side but not the passenger side. Anyone know the reason?

WW II vehicle would not have had turn signals so they were added later. That side may be open because something long was laid there as part of the trucks rigging.

The left brush guard also protected the blackout driving light, now removed in favor of a turn signal. Sometime also the siren if installed.

The WC54 Dodge ambulance had a very similar arrangement.
