A friend of mine served with the 1st Cav over in RVN around '67-'68. He was on a very hot LZ during extraction and they were able to get everyone out but his squad which were pinned down due to intense ground fire from the woodline. My buddy and his squad were proned out retuning fire and receiving much more in return. A couple of attempts were made by brave helicopter crews to get them out but only succeded in getting themselves shot down. A minigun armed OH6A came skirting along about 8ft off the deck and came to a hover right above the squad's position. The pilot began to rake the wood line back and forth with that minigun*. The return fire was so intense that it actually drove that OH6A off. He didn't go willingly as he backed up (flew backwards) returning the enemy's fire until he was out of the way. In the end, they had to bring in some fixed wing stuff and really blast the woodline before they could extract my friend and his squad.

* When my friend told me the above story he mentioned two things 1) "I was sure glad I wore my helmet that day because of the shower of hot spent brass that fell on us." And 2) "That thing made such a roar I thought I was going to get sucked up into it" I commented about how loud a turbine powered helicopter would be that close to which he replied "No, it wasn't the bird, but that minigun"!

Tanks are cool, anti-tank weapons are cooler.

Hello All,

Wow, Rick, You were on cue! My typing is terrible :) But a VERY TRUE STORY ! And Motorcityman, I know about TOW's. I was a TOW section chief, while stationed at Fort Polk. I had 3 M113 TOW tracks attached to a 4.2 mortar company. Tows were cool until the WIRES snapped, 200mtrs from the laucher tube :( Graf 1973. Yea, they will give you a Bad hair day. The T72 was all hyped up. Piece of sh-t. Thin armor. For the most part, all russian tanks I crawled in were sh-t. Mass produced crap.
Comment on U tube Video: 1st one i watched was ODD. I never have seen a TOW expload above a T 72 and take the turret off. If they inpact-they sure will.i think that it was another type missle to explode like that. Almost like the arty Copperhead round . But, I must admit, it was fun shootin the taxpayers $$ in maingun rounds and TOW Missles.
Hope Everyone has Cleared the cobb webs by now!

Oh yea Rick, I did have many hensey's :)
