Looking for info on Vietnam era mortar 81mm

Unread post by m151dave » April 14th, 2010, 9:01 pm

I am looking for detailed information for the M29 mortar, Vietnam era. I need measurements, dimensions, good pictures of how it is constructed.

Can anybody point me to a good source? No luck in my internet searches so far.

Many thanks!

hi, the "guidebook for Marines" from 1967 has 10--11 pages on the 81-mm. mortar. I don't know if the websites would have easier way of getting access to this info or not.I don't know how to transfer the info from this guidebook via the computer to you.
hopes this helps you out.

Thanks! I plan to try and build a very accurate replica of the mortar. Not sure if I can yet, need all the details I can find. If I do this, I am doing it right!

dave i was a 81mm mortarman in the army. we had the i81's they were the same as used in Vietnam. Today they use the m252 81mm mortar. I have a couple of manuals around here somewhere. if i can find them there yours. (-10, 23p). also the site your looking for is the m53a1 sight. dont mistake it with the m64a1 sight. Those came to us around 89. When i was in south Korea in 2006 the ROK was using our old mortars. they were dated in the 60's and 70's. Ive been searching for sometime for the i81 myself. Give me a call (417)316-1167 and i can help you more with it. Not too good with this computer.

Our group is named The Last Patrol. We have been at it for about 4 years now. Our biggest problem is recruiting. We are teamed with the Kansas Museum of Military History and provide crew and troops for their UH1H helicopter that is mounted on a trailer. We take it to a lot of exhibits and it offers us a chance to get the word out to folks about who the museum is what it does.

We are just about to finish construction on a first generation Vietnam convoy gun truck. The last machine gun is due any day now. We will add it to the outreach program and it will be out in parades and exhibits this year. With vehicles owned by the museum and Patrol members we will actually be able to field a short convoy. My 151, the museum gun truck, another deuce the museum owns, along with members M37, M38, another M35.

here are some links to some of this

this one documents the truck build

By the way if anybody is close enough to attend, we are having an open house and Armed Forces Day celebration on May 15th at the museum in Augusta Kansas. No cost to attend or exhibit your vehicles!

Yall come down to Jackson, MS for the firebase Friday event on June 10-13. We're gonna have the M113 ACAV (possibly two), plenty of machine guns and grenade launchers to be played with and lots of space for vehicles to be driven. Be a good place to play with these new toys everyone is getting. Will also have a couple of nam vets coming in to hang out. Last year John Burford (a LRRP Team leader in vietnam) led a team out in the field for 2 days and had a hoot.

i looked for the manual. but cant find it. What your looking for is for the m29 or m29a1. Good thing is that the baseplate used today is the same thing.

For some reason I can not get it to load. The web page opens but it just sits and sits. Any suggestions?
