Hi, now that my unibody is out of the garage and at work waiting to be bead blasted I thought I would tear down
the engine and see what was still good, the internal parts are in very good shape and will be reused I will
be replacing the rings, main, rod, and cam bearings, all "freeze plugs" and gaskets.
The pistons and valves cleaned up great, just need to hand lap the valves.

Mr. Recovery,
Just curious but was your vehicle not running? I took all the covers off my engine and decided that there was no point to spend money on a rebuild. My engine was running with no problems but had leaks in several places. It had 4K indicated on the odometer and the inside was amazingly clean no carbon or sludge build-up. I did decide to change my flywheel (chipped teeth) and clutch assembly, just because.

m-11 and Floyd, I have never had this engine runing or even tried to start it, when I got the Mutt the gas tank was full of water and rust, the carb was just hanging on the studs, mud wasp nest in the intake, you know had been siting a long time but it did turn free by hand, the speedo showes 18,343 there wsa no ridge in the cylinders to speek of, the pistons pushed out by hand, no broken rings, cyl walls look good and are within standard limits, the rod and main's show normal wear and are standard with a date of 7-64, not sure the engine is original to my mutt as the ID plate showes 10-63 as DOD. I have 4 other engines that have not been run by me, all but 1 is missing at least 1 part to keep it from runing, the one that is complete has been with me sinch the mid 70's that was in the 4X4 Vega I built from a rolled mutt I picked up when I worked for the Colorado Army National Guard.
This is how my 63 looked when I picked her up.
This is the 4X4 72 Vega/ Mutt
This is the Mutt I used to make the4X4 Vega in 1976
