Can I use DOT 5 brake fluid?

Unread post by Motorcityman » March 15th, 2009, 9:38 pm

My MUTT has been in storage these past 4-5 years and just retrieved it today, dead battery, no brakes and head off motor with a bunch of parts. I want to attack the brakes before I do the head as i'm gonna want to drive it when I get it started  I don't recall ever doing any brake work to any M151's i've owned, I do know silicone brake fluid is used, isn't DOT 5 silicone based? Thanks, Joe.

Dot 5 is Silicone but watch out for Dot 5.1. It is not silicone and should not be used.

How much does one fill up ? There's no marking & till it starts to flow out no one knows. Is there a catch to this too ?

You fill up the master cylinder until you reach the bottom of the threads on the cap. Of course you may need to bleed the brakes.
