Brake Lights are Out - Ideas?

Unread post by mrdibbles » February 20th, 2009, 1:59 pm

Hey Guys-
I have a new front and rear wiring harness installed and have lost my brake lights. I have brake lights when I have the lights on (meaning the brake lights really light up when I depress the brake pedal) but that's it. If the lights are off the brake lights don't light up when I depress the pedal. Ideas?
Thanks!
Matt-

do you have the headlight switch positioned so the brakes lights will work? or is it off completely.....

otherwise, I'd suspect a connection not fully in place or bad ground

Ok... here may come a dumb question... do I have to have my lights "on" to have brakelights? Is that how this system works? If I need to have my switch in a correct position to run brake lights then that's news to me

Dude...

The top switch has to be one click to the right for brake lights only. When all the switches are off you have nothing at all. The brake lights were switched that way so that when you run blacked out you dont give yourself away every time you hit the brakes. Page 2-4 in the dash 10 explains all the different lighting combinations possible.

LOL... sounds good thanks Moose! My next question will be how to fix my turn signals... the lever doesn't return to the neutral position once I complete my turn

Well since Mr. D brought up the subject...

What are some troubleshooting steps in fixing the blinkers?

In my case i've taken apart the blinker assembley and cleaned it, checked the connections, and used a meter to make sure i had good continuity.

I checked the connector for volts and got it.

I also checked the buld and it's fine.

One time, and one time only, just for a split second, the blinker buld came on when i wiggled the cable.

I checked all the grounds and sanded them down to get a good metal to metal contact.

What else is there?
