Transfer seals
I read that it is possible to us a Timken #472826 for the transfer seal without using the wear sleeve, has anyone tried one? Hambone

Re: Transfer seals
Guess I'll be the guinea pig, I ordered 3, $5.00 ea., hopefully they work and they won't be 40 years old, never understood the wear sleeve, did the yokes have a problem with wear?
Re: Transfer seals
Any yoke will eventually develop a groove where the seal rides. How fast it happens all depends on conditions. I think the military just wanted to eliminate having two items to do the same job in the inventory. I have about 30 yokes from differentials they all have grooves in them so they do wear. The outputs may not see quite as much gunk as the differentials but there is a lot of off roading done in the military.

Re: Transfer seals
You're right, they were driven back then, now days they do more sitting, I'm going back with new yokes and these seals, maybe they will seal up and it won't mark it's territory , only time will tell.

Re: Transfer seals
Looks like I have room to double seal it.

Re: Transfer seals
You could but there is really no need to beside wasting a second seal. If you use double seals the outer seal will never see any lubrication from the oil and it will burn up as soon as whatever you put on at installation goes away.

Re: Transfer seals
Good point, these seem to fit a little tighter, probably won't drive it enough to wear the yoke out, could I just pack the outer with grease, would that keep it from burning?
Re: Transfer seals
Maybe, or you could just drive in one seal just a hair past flush and call it a day. Personally, I would use the original seals and sleeves since you obviously have them. That way if the seal ever goes bad you know what seal it is. You do not need to replace the sleeve every time. If you go with the civvie seal route be sure to have that recorded somewhere that you have access to it.
