dreaded Heater question.

Unread post by tbh726 » September 23rd, 2021, 9:51 pm

After reading a bunch on the heater, it appears i might have to jump to the dark side... So here is the story... as i got my A2 running i am following the advice to flush the engine, radiator and figured the heater since the antifreeze has been just sitting in engine and heater for 17 years... so i ran it a little bit with the heater valves closed, then i opened them and ran it for a little bit, more like quick drive around and just letting it sit running. it got to running temperature and i started to notice "flush" water and flush running down the back of the floor board. i check where the hoses come in and the clamps are good and not leaking. the hoses are brand new. if i remember right that is a possible sign of a leaking Heater core.

is there any way to say for sure before i go down the road of replacing it? It does blow great heat, just leaking. is it worth putting something like stop leak or something like that in?

thoughts?

thanks Tim

I'd say, NO. Do the work.

Take the core out and let someone test, then repair it. Yes, they may even tell you it would be better to replace it altogether. Not the kind of news you'd want to hear but better than a bunch of stop leak in the rest of your rig, only to have the thing crap out all over your floor....all over again.

My opinion only.
Not valid in all fifty states.
Your mileage may vary.
Not returnable in MI, RI, ME, NH, FL, CA, OR, ID, NB, ND, SD, WV, VA, GA, KY, NC, SC....well, you get the idea....

Cheers,
TJ

A long time ago, one of the mutt venders told me R&R the heater core is one of the hardest task to do on a mutt. The 1 mutt didn't have a heater in it which was a harder task to install. Aw, maybe I was just too a novice.

I've heard that too. Of course, that doesn't excuse one from making the repair.

It could be worse....

Sometimes ya just gotta roll up your sleeves and butt heads with the problem.

And in the "could be worse" photo, he is not showing you were the heater is on the 39. Right on the passenger side fender!

If you decide to pull it it is not that bad, I just did it....Twice!

Manual TM 9-2320-218-20-1-2 may1982 Pg 11-80 http://www.imfmotorpool.com/TM_9-2320-2 ... ay1982.pdf

Personal experience tells me this works best if you pull the windshield off!!!. and pull out the passenger seat.

Pull the bracket on the bottom that bolts to the floor, 2X 7/16" hex on the floor, 2x 1/2 hex on the bottom of the heater. One of these is tapped into the heater, the one toward the engine is a Nut and Bolt.

Cut the hoses and just get new ones, they will be more pliable and easier to work with and will last another 25 years.

Pull the electrical connector now! There are 2 air ducts connected to the diverter box held on with hose clamps (5/16" hex or slot screwdriver) un due those.

4x 7/16" hex on top of cowl, once you get them all out and get the Cowl Vent Heater Intake Vent Cover out by tipping the back up and rotating to the 2 opposite corners, then the tabs on the cover will slip out. There is a small wire that is spring loaded attached to the vent opening inside the mutt for hearer diverter, don't bend or let it damage the screen in the cowl.

Now the only thing holding the cowl up is 5/16" bolt on the bottom of the dashboard, While you unscrew that, have someone hold up on the heater from the hole in the cowl ( where you just removed the cowl vent) till it's loose. Then both of you lower it a couple inches then rotate the bottom out towards the rear of the vehicle. Slip it out of the vehicle.

Now 4 1/2" hex bolts and the core cover will pop off slip the core out and do as you see fit. Get it pressure tested at a radiator shop to check for leaks.
If you decide to use it have them boil/clean it out, Make the work worth it!

Good luck and may God save your soul! You will likely take his name in vain during this adventure!

Oh i can see this is going to be a fun winter... nobody seems to be a fan of the heaters in these things, but heat in the winter would be nice... some great input... i will let you know how it goes.
